Have been doing some testing with the different headlight covers and got some interesting results.
So with the normal headlight cover on, intake temp is 60, running with the lights up, is 35, using the Racing Beat vented cover (the red one) it's 50, the cheap crappy homemade job (the white one) is 42, and with no head light cover in place it is 52!!!
Took off the black plastic thingy that is attached to the bonnet and sits behind the light cover and did it all over again, and the intake temp for the white/red and no cover dropped about 4 degrees, the lights up and normal cover about the same, maybe 1 degree.
So the cheap crappy one does the best job, other than driving everywhere with the lights up. SPRSTA doesn't like the look of the cheap crappy one, so running with the Racing Beat one for the moment, should be able to open up the intake hole a bit, see if that makes any sort of difference.

While I was driving yesterday I got sick of the heat build up around the transmission tunnel. The rubber around the gear stick has perished and I get a lot of heat coming up through the gaiter. I decided to flip the lights up to see if the increased airflow would drop the temp. I did this at Onehunga south bound on Highway 20. I was surprised to notice a distinct drop after only getting to the Massey Rd offramp. Thats only about 6km. I reckon the carpet temp would have dropped at least 5-10 degrees. I will put a thermocouple down the gear stick opening one day and get an actual temp recording...... I wish I had a V8 though. Thought this may be of interest after seeing your temp drop with lights up.
My intake temp drops within a couple of minutes of driving with the lights up.
I get a lot of heat soak into the cabin from the trans tunnel no matter what, good in winter, not so great in summer. The blonkers in Hamilton should have put heat shield on the trans tunnel (as they do on all the flying Miata projects, and one of the things listed in the instructions), I'm going to have to do it at some stage, sooooo many things on the list to get sorted out still, it's a live with at the moment, good excuse to drive around with the window down and listen to the exhuast note.
Don't have any any rubber around the gearstick. When I got the car, there was nothing there, just a big gap that you looked down, like that the heat coming into the cabin was 10 times worse, my solution was just get an old pair of jeans and pack it around the transmission, not exactly the most elegant, but helped the situation. Again something else on the to do list. Sigh.

Tempted the anger of the brake gods this weekend and went to Hamptons to try out the new 225/45/16 wheel tyre combo along with the suspension bushes that went in.
Fog had shut us down for the first couple of hours, and didn't get a run on the track till 11, had the suspension set up wrong, and major understeer insued, and the brakes didn't feel right either, only doing 1:19's around the track
Adjusted the suspension, and checked the brakes, and wadda you know, another set of rotors bite's the dust.
Swear I get about 2 or 3 tracks days from set of front rotors, rears are still the originals.

In the end, thought bugger it, and went out in the rest of the sessions, just was well off the gas long before the corner's so the braking effort required wasn't that much worse than on the road, still managed to get in a 1:21.
So, another different set of rotor's ordered, another $500 kissed goodbye, and victory to Hampton's in the war on killing brakes.
Weird part, was this time, round after running with the different front end, wasn't getting anywhere near the extreme temps that I was getting before, so I might just put it down to damage to the rotors from before, and see how I get on with the new ones

Mind you, my day ended up a lot cheaper than a couple of other peoples, like the Audi R8 that decided to become a three wheeler when it's suspension collapsed, or the driver of the new Maclaren that thought he knew better than the electronics of the car, turned them off, and found he didn't after putting it into the wall at turn 1.
Done a couple of little things to the car, and by that I mean 2low2c did.
Moved the power steering reservoir from it's silly location of half sitting ontop of the suspension tower, and put in a cooling loop in front of the radiator to try and get it to stop boiling over and spilling it's contents all over the engine bay.
While the car was there 2low2c decided to move the air intake from even the more sillier position of being just above the headers sucking in all that lovely hot air from them, and has moved it to pick up in front of the radiator, so air temp going in there is only a couple of degrees up on ambient air temp, and not 60 odd.
And just because he was bored, put in an tray to help flow the air out of the radiator, and hopefully away from from the brakes, so they get to suck on cooler air as well.

Dyno results from running on teamjelly's dyno, 245kw ATW, and a bit of a torque table rather than curve

New tyres/wheels for the track days, think they might be a bit dodge in the wet tho, and yes they are dot road legal, but god knows who would be stupid enough to do that.

although I do think I have a bit of a problem, anybody know if there is a tyreholics anonymous?

Yes, the 16x9's arrived from Jap land, actually haven't had a change to try them on the car, pretty sure they should fit and clear the caliper ok. Might do a test fit this weekend.
Also got another pair of 16x9' from Jap land just arrive as well, to add, that I was going to put some Nitto 275 drag tyres on for the summer night wars to try and get some grip, but have just looked at the tyres sizes again and the 275 are for a 15" rim and the biggest size in the 16" is 245. Poos.
And just to add to the collection, got a set of 16x8 3 piece wheels for only $700, couldn't pass them up at that price (think the colour has something to do with it, they are black and bright, and I mean bright green)

Put some drag tyres on (my phone is having a hissy fit trying to upload photo's to flickr, so hopefully will post some time later), and they kinda fit in the wheel arch.
When I say kinda, they do as long as long as I don't move anywhere, as they touch the part of the guard at the bottom behind the door, and no amount of raising or lowering it seems to stop it from touching.
I'm thinking it might be time to visit the angle grinder and carefully trim off a few mm, as I can't see any other way around it for the time being.

oh yeah, and I have done what every porn stars longs for, and gained another inch......in the exhaust. Have gone from a 2.5' to a 3.5", tight fit, but non the less a fit all the same.
Unfortunately as part of the process of getting the new exhaust, discovered that the rubber diff mounts have pretty much fallen to bits, so have to get that sorted out sooner rather than later.
