Vehicle Import

Post by Donovan » Wed Dec 21, 2011 10:49 pm

I have been considering for a little while on bringing in a bit of a rare car in from Japan, but since the rules have changed just recently to do with the importation of vehicles from Japan, I am not even sure whether I can anymore or not.

It was a limited run of I think only 5,000 to the JDM only, and I don't know of any that have ever been brought into NZ.

Does anyone know a good authority to have a chat to about what exclusions and things to do that might allow a limited production run vehicle in. I assume there must be something, for the like of guys that bring the old muscle cars in from the US etc.

There is a way for rare/interesting/special cars that exempts them from some regular import laws but I don't know the details, I just know of a few people bringing in TVR, Lotus etc from the UK that way. SIV (special interest vehicle) or something perhaps?

Yeah, that's what I heard, but just need to talk to someone and pick their brains to see whether this particular car falls into the "special interest".

Suppose I could also try the guy doing the Low Vol cert on the MX5

The pistonheads.com forums have an NZ section which is where a few TVR and Lotus guys hang out, you could try there for info as thats where I've heard it mentioned.

That might help.

What are you looking at bring in ?,Rules are ltd to 400 low volume cars a year we can bring in if it's pre 89,Even less if it's later year and has to be really low production,
We found out we could have bought in a 00 MAZDASPEED SP20 as they only made 100 units,This happened to it instead;

This is what I am looking to bring in, an NB RS Fastback coupe, this is a factory tin top that, not quite sure of the numbers made, but don't know of any this part of the world.

Don't know if it is going to be special enough for the SIV reg's, as their production run was in the thousands, not hundreds, but that was across 4 different models, not sure how many of just the RS tin top were made.

Very tidy. Almost doesn't look like an mx5 and I can guarantee my friends wouldn't know it was an mx5

I think you will find made in 100's,should be good to go.
Check with your local Vehicle compliance company,If you can get a chassis number off the car will help them.
Those are RARE and very cool !!

Yes they are rare and very cool, and maybe with a rotary in them, could be the RX7 that Mazda should have made all along.

Something about the fastback NA doesn't really do it for me, but that NB is absolutely gorgeous!
