Headlight Question - Twin Headlights

Post by poison » Thu Jul 15, 2004 6:25 pm

Hi Adrian

It's purely cosmetic, from what I've read in reviews when they are on dip
there is only one light on each side, the same for full beam, so some people
have added relays or swapped the lights for both dip and full beam models as
it looks great. But big $$$$.

I was keen to do this but found that the USA kits which seem the cheapest
option dip to the right (a little known fact) where as in NZ our lights have
to dip to the left. For example when you import a car from the USA you have to
swap the head lights so they dip down to the left.

Headlight Question - Twin Headlights

Post by SLYDIT » Thu Jul 15, 2004 7:33 pm

there are two types of quad light low profile kits.
One is BSP which uses motorcycle lights and arent that
great, and cant be modified to dip left unless you can replace all the lenses.
The second is the "Moss motors" kit which uses fully
aproved Hella units In which the outer is a dip lens
and the inner is a spot lens. The dip lenses can
easily be modded to left dip by simply removing the
special reflector blind in front of the bulb and flipping it over.
BUT Wait theres more.
Hella New Zealand qouted about $260 EACH for the lamp
units so that a VERY VERY expensive set of lights!!!
The full Moss kit is available from australia for
about 1300 Australian dollars OUCH!
The hella units can be seen by doing a google search
for "susquehanna motorsport"
you need to find the 90mm hella units

Headlight Question - Twin Headlights

Wow they look great, but some close up pictures would be good, I wonder how
hard it would be to make something like this? Maybe the pop-up style would be
easier, as with the Perspex ones you can see them in the daylight so the
finish has to be much better.

I read the installation instructions for the Moss Kit and am impressed at the
detail they have gone to. If anyone has any ideas on how to make some please
share. The hardest part would be the getting some adjustable mounting rings
and then installing them at the correct angle. And as Glenn found out getting
the lights themselves could be expensive too.

Just a thought

Headlight Question - Twin Headlights

Post by SLYDIT » Sat Jul 17, 2004 7:08 pm

The hella units have all the adjusters built in. you
just need to make up a frame to hang them in. Ive
looked into using factory frames but that wont
work.Cheapest solution would be track down some motor
bike lights and custom make some frames from sheet
aluminium. But for all the effort the moss kit is a
very good piece of gear, when you factor in how much
the hella lights are, although susquehanna motorsport
has them for US$60 each, which could be a possibility.

I am quite keen on having fixed lights in my '96 MX. I will dig up a headlight
cover and get a price for making acrylic covers. I will get prices on small
quantities ( say 10) Can't be that difficult to make a metal plate to hold the
lights bearing in mind there are pictures available. I noticed a Falcon
yesterday with very small headlights so perhaps about that size would do the
job. Wiring them is beyond me but I visualise 2 small lights each side. one for
full beam and one for dipped .

Headlight Question - Twin Headlights

Post by poison » Mon Jul 19, 2004 6:05 pm

Hi Colin

I also don't like the pop-up lights so I've been looking at the photo's on web
sites people have suggested, but I have one concern.
On a normal headlight the beam travels outwards form the light (especially on
dip), as the light is sitting so low and back into the car by about 300mm, I
wonder how much of a shadow they will cast on the road, ie; how much road will
there be without light in front of the car. Maybe this is not an issue, I'm
just wondering. Thoughts or experience here anyone please.

Headlight Question - Twin Headlights

Post by SLYDIT » Mon Jul 19, 2004 7:18 pm

There has been much discussion on the American forums
about those recessed ("Midd Ten")lights, and the poor
lighting they put out as Gazza described. The
shrouding caused by the recessed nature of the lamp
causes a long dark patch in front of the car which
isnt very good for doging potholes and tight bends.
( BTW Falcon lights wont fit-they're too big, only
the 90mm hellas will fit.)

Headlight Question - Twin Headlights

Post by poison » Wed Jul 21, 2004 7:11 pm

Just found these on the web
http://www.susquehanna.com/susq/hella/headlamp.htm#90mm look half way down the
page under 90mm, not a bad price and come with adjusters, so only have to
build a simple frame and Perspex cover.

Can anyone tell me what DOT compliant means please? And also ECE??? I assume
this is not an indication of if it dips left or right...

Cheers

DOT is Department Of Transportation in the USA.
ECE is European Economic Community. ECE 'cause it's probably French!
DOT will dip to the right as they would be for left hand drive, as will ECE.
It would have to meet UK standards I would think to be assured they dip to
the left as required here. If buying from the 'States then you won't have
legal lights for NZ. No way would any supplier in the USA have left dipping
lights, I suspect, unless they are exporting large quantities to right hand
drive countries. Not likely!
I'm staying with my standard size Hellas as light output and pattern is more
important to me than appearance. I happen to rather like those lights popped
up at night.

Using typical Kiwi ingenuity and a bit of lateral thinking research has almost
been completed for an alternative solution. There should be a unit available in
the very near future. Watch this space .
