Mine was fitted to the car when it came from Japan - it's a standard fitting
on my model ( 97 SR Ltd) I think, so is presumably available through Mazda. It
avoids the problems of blocked air flow and illegal stick-ons. Projects a
little too, so it the event of parking nudges it's the first thing to go, not
the paintwork. And yes, mine has a small crack for exactly that reason.
Slightly too high and too narow for NZ plates, but it looks OK.

The only place I've seen them is
http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info. ... cts_id/222
It claims to be a genuine Mazda part, so it might be available from the Mazda dealers here.
I bought some strips of aluminium and made a bracket for mine. It worked out pretty well and only took me about an hour to make.

The Wellington chapter was thinking of getting one
copied and then modifying for the NZ plate. It
is definitely the best way to mount a legal number
plate. I'll have a chat to our contacts about speeding
up the process.
