Nearly two months later I'm wondering if I should build a temporary carport garage thing, or try to appropriate one of those canvas carport things. As of saturday I'll have a couple weeks to get these things done, then new tyres and I'm away!

Your ones were really well done. I don't know what colour they were though.
If the rain fucks off for tomorrow I'm going to do the centre coat... Hohoh. Then weather permitting, I can go for new tyres quicker than I thought.
... But what do I do with the rest of the term break?

Have started on the top coat of metallic charcoal. Looks great, except it's gone all wrinkly in some places - Wtf is causing that?
Suspect I'll have to sand and do those bits again. Grr.

not enough drying time causes the orange peel effect.

Enamels go through a sensitive period in which they'll wrinkle if topcoated. Basically the first coat has skinned over but is still soft underneath, when you hit it with the second coat that skin absorbs the solvent in the second coat and expands, just like the skin on your hands in a hot bath. So it's either leaving them too long or not long enough between coats.
Yup, the only solution is to sand them and repaint if you want a better finish.

Eugh. God dammit.
Paint stripper it is, seeing as sanding didn't work and the rest all peeled off.

Have had at it with paint stripper. Will be getting the wire wheel drill attachment onto it within the next week.
The up shot to this is I get to use power tools, and there is potential for my stepdad to use this as leverage to buy a compressor and or sandblaster.

Some of the best money I ever spent was on a compressor. You'll do a way better job than rattle cans for painting too. Just be sure you get a big enough one.

The trick with painting wheels is to clean them, then clean them again and clean them once more.

Made sure they were clean as fuck this time. Really can't afford a compressor.
Now begins phase two. I've got better at masking too, oddly enough.
Quite pleased with this primer. It's ... Almost self levelling.
Lucky the tyres are disappearing asap I s'pose.
Hoping for fine weather tomorrow. Should be able to prime them a wee bit more.
Now, the degreaser I have is pretty evil stuff and I'm afraid it will eat through the primer. What else can I clean them with before it's top coat time?

All your cleaning, degreasing should have been done before you under coated, since you have undercoated the rims your next step is to sand the rims down LIGHTLY with 320 grit wet and dry or a finer grade so your topcoat
will adhere to your undercoat. Do make sure you get all the dust of before you topcoat. We used to use tack cloth for this. Not sure what they use today as I havn't been in the painting trade for about 20 years now.
I didn't make a mistake. I gave you a observation test and you JUST passed.

New tyres tomorrow, so I'll post proper pictures once they're on eh.
Looking pretty bloody good I reckon. Happier than I thought I'd be.

Edit: Probably cost 4x what I was expecting it to, but it's sure as shit cheaper than a new set of wheels!

Look great mate. Have you clear coated them? I would not put new tyres on until the paint has gone off

Other voices more experienced than mine have suggested not to clearcoat, so I haven't.
