Broken External Door Mirror Needed

Post by Bill Rehm » Wed Apr 12, 2006 12:35 pm

I need a 'the guts' of an external door mirror and its base. It can be a
broken mirror, passenger or drivers side. There are a few internal parts
I need so I may repair mine on the passenger side, the guts of which
have rusted through and snapped.

Can anyone assist??

Happened to me a couple of years back. Was enjoying the Ardmore airshow and
discovered someone had bumped my drivers side mirror out of place upon
getting back to the car. It came off as I tried to twist it back in place.
Rusted through!
I got a new one from Ross at the MX5 mart. Think it was around $70

Obviously the mirror internals are a bit of a weak point. I have also had one
snap off..then looking at the other to see if it could be
lubricated...promptly snapped that one too. Ross at MX5 can sell you new
mirrors or repair the old ones for you at a very reasonable price...

Ditto

I lost an external mirror & have one on order from Ross to replace it.

Checked the other side & found the internals in a parlous state. More rust
in there than anything else. I did "create" a solution that involved a
trip to the hardware store & some creativity - quite easy once the
appropriate bits are found. I wrote the exercise up for TopDown & it may
appear in the next edition - not sure.

Can provide a sneak preview (& pictures) if anyone needs it sooner.

Hey Bill

This may sound a bit muffled, but try as I might, I cannot remove my tongue
from the side of my mouth:

"Bottom-line: May I suggest list you resist in being "penny-wise and
pound foolish" (an expression learned from Bill Rehm's 87 yo, extremely wise
father whose only experience in the UK was during WWII) and simply spend
the few extra dollars it costs to purchase from a MX5 dealer, the
appropriate external door mirror???
Be advised the lack of the above described practice may be why, from a
cultural perspective, some people will prefer to spend $ on purchasing only 10
carat gold jewellery, as opposed to Indian and American cultures who
will not settle for anything less than 14 or 23 (culturally
respectively) carat gold.

Had a wee tip from a woman at the car show. Get a draught excluder from the
Warehouse. That works really well for putting in the fold.

Some people, like yourself David, have a propensity for opening your
mouth simply to exchange feet.

My mirror is already repaired. Total time: 15 minutes. Total cost: less
than $5

Cost through Mazspare: $150
Cost through Ross (based on other emails on this topic) at least $70

Consequently, I might be forgiven for thinking your attempt to exploit
my own words are not relevant to the matter at hand. I might also add
you didn't warrant my investing the time I have to respond to you.
However, I believe a person should be exposed for what they can
clinically, by their own actions, can be diagnosed as. In your case,
your symptoms and diagnosis is blatantly obvious.

That aside, I'll simply again offer you the opportunity to email me
directly:

bill@kase.co.nz

so we may meet, in an effort on my part to unselfishly facilitate your
"personal enlightenment". That is if you are the "coglini" your emails
indicate you are.

PS: (don't waste your time goggling for the translation, as an informed
individual with global knowledge and experience well knows the literal
translation, and how the word is used to mean, are quite different.) But
hey, I'm sure a man of your intellect and global experience no doubt
already knew that . please advise David, have I assumed and given you
more credit than you deserve???

Yours faithfully and consistently
Bill

Hey again Bill

I make no claims to being informed, or having global knowledge and experience,
and like as not, I am not due any credit at all. I do have a talent for
finding carparks in busy areas though. I am just enjoying being part of the
community that is this forum.

I know what you mean about pricing though, Mazda recently suggested that I pay
over $300 to replace the door power window assembly. If I had made that
choice, even with the discount that is offered to Club financial members (10
to 15% I think), it would stilI have been expensive. It took a bit longer than
15 minutes to finish the repair myself but the cost was in the order of yours.

Glad to learn we have reached "a meeting of the minds" David. My offer
to meet face to face so that we may get to know each other still stands.

Personally, I believe the greatest benefit to being a member of this
list is the knowledge acquired that does enable substantial savings on
repairs, etc.

Though, as I have previously articulated, I might be forgiven for
thinking there are times when occasionally, list members get a bit
"carried away" . myself included :-)

Bill

How about gently pushing the roof up just before you open the door/s to
encourage the water to roll down the back of the roof.

Back to the topic of the broken mirror (as I have one too), The internal
spring and 'bolt' were bably rusted. The 'bolt' actually rusted thru &
snapped. What exactly do you use to replace these items? Where can they
be sourced?

Bill
Given that many member report a similar fault of broken mirrors would you
share how you repaired the mirror. I suspect that I will have the problem at
some time.
One aspect of the list that I find extremely valuable is the advice provided
on making repairs to "wear and tear" factors.

your lack of intelligence . :-)

Tony

Just returned home and am in the process of preparing for a trip away
for the EWE. Will be happy to share my approach when I return next week,
which while not "perfect" is what we refer to in 'nautical circles' as a
more than adequate 'jury rig'.

Considering the source of the statement below Ken, I can only take it as
a compliment. That aside, personally speaking, be assured quite some
time ago, you more than sufficiently confirmed what in fact you are: a
"coglini", regardless as to what vehicle you drive.

Thanks

Hi Guys
Our mirror is absolutely fine (swappa mirrors from Ross) but the near side one
has a different shaped glass in it so everything appears much closer.
Apparently this is a preference of the Japanese but we find the width of view
too narrow. Any ideas where we can get the glass changed? Yes we do have
local glaziers we just wondered if there is a club specialist who knows where
to get the new/correct glass and how easy it is to replace it ourselves?

Cheers

Ciao Tutti!

Ok. I can help with the Italian "real world" definition of a coglini.
Firstly, there is no such word! I believe what Bill meant to say (and correct
me if I'm wrong) was coglione. It would only be coglioni if it was to many
people but since it looks like it was just meant for Ken, it's coglione.
Coglione means "balls". The male sort.
To call someone a coglione is to call them a "bloody idiot" or stronger words
to that effect.
You can only call a man a coglione, for the reason stated above.

Hope that helps!

David

To get back to where all this started!!!, There is a writeup in the Miata
garage of how one person solved their problem with the "floppy mirror". Go
here; http://www.cockyracingguy.com/door_mirror.htm

For what it is worth, there is a goldmine of information on the Miata site;
http://forum.miata.net/vb/ and in the garage section;
http://www.miata.net/garage/
I stand behind my earlier note about button pushers, AND the need for
tolerance.
