Hi all,
Just wanted to introduce myself as a new MX5 owner. My name is Colin
Larsen and I live in Strathmore, Wellington.
I have just purchased a 1992 Eunos Roadster with 117,000 k's on the
clock. It has just yesterday had a brand new Robbins top fitted by
Rotary Motor Trimmers in Wellington. These guys did a wonderful job for
a great price. I paid $700 for the top (with zip down window, same as
the old one) and $250 for fitting. Looking forward to a week or two down
the track when the new top has settled in and I can get it down. The car
has been looked after wonderfully by it's previous owner so I'm looking
forward to lots of trouble free (and fun!) motoring.

Cheers for now
Colin.

Welcome to the "club" Colin. I bought mine (90 red) a few weeks back.
Won't be long before you're zipping around with a silly grin on your
face. They are a lot of fun.

and a big hearty welcome to you!
I'd recommend joining the club - if you've yet to do so try this link,
there's a space to enter your email address and have a membership form
mailed out to you.
http://www.mx5club.org.nz/join/

or you can email Frans on membership@mx5club.org.nz
and ask him to post one.

Fingers crossed for fine weather this weekend, and remember to unzip your
window before putting the roof down!

Hi Peter and all,
Thanks for the welcomes. The car is silver and I have the club
membership form in pdf just arrived in the email a few minutes ago.

The auto trimmer recommended I keep the top up for at least a week - and
two if I could stand it :-)

Cheers, Colin.

I had my first roof a week before I broke the window - didn't know about the
unzipping, and with a hard frost the plastic had gotten quite hard... so
"crack" "ouch" "$$"

Welcome Colin from the Sunny South. Go for a run to Akl. You'll need
to keep it up there or wear it out changing between "showers". He's
right about the window and don't forget the boot/tonneau cover to keep
the ultry violet rays offa the inside of ur nice new hood.

Hi Colin et al., I also just bought an MX5 ('90, red,
manual); and didn't know about the plastic window 'til I
read it on the miata garage website...luckily I didn't
damage it from not unzipping. Several men have said to me
that the MX5 is a nice "ladies car", so its good to see from
the banter back and forth that it ain't exactly so...

Anyone from the Marlborough region? I would normally say we
would have more "top down" (of the MX5 that is!!) weather
than most, but sadly can't from the last couple of weeks.
Main things I enjoy is that high winds are not an issue,
parking and backing in small places are a cinch with no rear
end (again I refer to the MX5 here!) to speak of, and you
don't need to slow down on corners!

Alli.

Golly... all these wonderful newbies with Mx5s. Welcome to
the world of fun trouble free motoring. I've had my red 92
for 6 years now, tuned it 3x, new roof, tyres and seatbelts.
One window winder. That's it. The car runs like a gem and is
so much fun. I want to keep it forever and the big plus is
that its worth so little these days that its cheaper to buy
a third car than part with it. Please please remember to at
least wave to other "five" owners. We all bought these cars
because they make you feel good driving in them, so a wave
is always nice to connect with a fellow believer.

Welcome Colin, fabulous cars, have had my 90 model, silver with yellow
stripes for 4 years now, used daily and really enjoy any oportunity for top
down motoring. The wait to let your top settle will be worth it, good tip
passed by others about unzipping the window prior to lowering top. Thank you
for the up to date info on cost and who did your work. My top will need
replacing in the near future. I live in Titahi Bay and travel to work in
Newtown may pass/wave sometime soon. Regards

Hi Allison.

There are some from the Marlborough region here and if you want to meet up
with some of us, call me on (03) 5789390.
the local club had an outing last Sunday, driving down the coast to the
Hapuku Lodge for a very pleasant lunch and then stopping off at The Store in
Kekerengu for dessert!
Great weather and top down all the way for the five of us that turned out.
Normally we gather at the Railway Station car park at 10am for a 10:30
start, second Sunday of the month. If you are interested I'll add you to our
local club e-mail list. The Nelson club is very active with many good runs.
If you are able to join them you will also enjoy their outings. Some of us
do when we can.
If you see a green 1998 NB (fixed headlight model) getting around with the
number plate FIX A PC then that's me.

Hi Colin
You indicated that you planned to join the MX5 Club. Suggest you identify
Kapiti as your Chapter. Like you I live in Wgtn and purchased an MX5 last
year. The Kapiti chapter includes members from Wgtn, Kapiti and the
Wairarapa and is very active.
Meetings held generally on the 3rd Sunday of the month. Involves a
pre-planned route with lunch.
The next meeting is on the 28 May with a visit to some of the northern
suburbs.
Contact me off the list you you want more details re contacts etc.

Well,

Seeing as everybody else is doing introductions, I might as well join in :)

Im Josiah (Friends call me Joe), and I bought a Black 1992 V-Spec in Dec
'05 (currently with 142,000k's on the clock). I can safely say that
after 4 months of driving it all over the show, I couldnt ever go back
to a normal car (Previously owned a '97 Hyundai Accent).

Im plenty keen to meet others from the Auckland region and get along to
some of the cruises. Im currently a member of another
performance-enthusiast club, not sure how they'd take to me joining
another club but I'll see how we go :)

In terms of trouble-free, Ive done the basic oil / filter, had to change
the spark plugs & leads, and within the next week will be replacing the
transmission fluid as well as the clutch (yikes) which is slipping a
little in the higher revs.

Im just curious if Im the only male who gets off-key comments about it
being a 'hair-dressers' car? Mostly I just smile and laugh along... not
sure if Im alone in that or not? I guess I just feel better, thinking
"If only you knew what you were missing out on".

Look forward to meeting some of you

Cheers

Joe

Hey Joe, Im in the Auckland area too with a 02 nb, but I have never even
heard of the 'gay' or 'hair dresser's' car since the day I got it about a
year ago :D comments have always been positive from males and females alike
:D

Im usually in and around the CBD area at University of Auckland or at Tamaki
Campus with the top down and some times when my girl friend is in the car
she likes to throw her hand up like she's in a roller coaster :D

The only thing I do notice is the lack of MX5 waves, I usually wave when
another MX5 passes by but have only had one lady in a crystal blue nb wave
at me :D maybe we need to start this tradition again haha, welcome to the
madness Joe!

Sherman,

Never seen you around and I work at the University. Always bring the Green
NA in. Agree with you, never had a negative remark about the car or the grey
haired driver!!!

If I see you around I will wave as I do to all fellow MX5 drivers.

I used to just punch them right on the nose when they said that
sort of thing, but people threatened me with expulsion from the
MX5list, so I tried a different way. Now I just flip my loose wrist
at them and walk away with a cutsey sway of my hips. They never say
it again... and curiously they always seem to avoid me after that. Keith

Tony, thanks for the info about the Kapiti club chapter, I'll certainly
put that on the form :-)

I'm not sure what the average age of the male owners on the list is, I'm
45 (and yes there is the odd grey hair too!). I certainly haven't had
any negative feedback since I announced I was getting my MX5, which is
not to say that my work colleagues don't think I'm going potty.

I'm sure my wife just thinks it's midlife crisis time too :-) But I told
her it was either this or a Harley - and I'm sure my MX5 is way more fun
already. 8-) And she'll drive in the MX5 with me, I wouldn't stand a
show of getting her on the back of a bike. ;-)

Cheers all

Hi Colin...

Welcome.
I have had my 93 1800 for almost 12 months...and have had a few things that
needed doing. But hey, a waterpump on a 12 yr old car is not unheard of and
plug leads etc.
In my experience, and from my research, MX5s respond to regular
maintenance.. ie 5000 oil/filter changes(not 10 as per handbook). In saying
that, I am amazed how many owners have spent 5 to 20 thou on an import and
not spent $50 on a handbook (and thus make basic errors re not unzipping
their window!)
Also have a new Robbins hood, and maintain it as suggested in the Robbins
Warrantee/Maintenance material.

Good luck,
Ian, ChCh

Hey Keith,

I have been noticing an increase in the number of MX5s at uni, there's a
green NA parked at Tamaki with a hard top on, that usually parks on the
sealed lot in front of the clinic :D is that you? haha if it is, then I have
seen you, but I usually park right next to the pond away from most cars on
the widest space avaiable to avoid door dings :D

Haha and if not keep an eye out for me, plate#: 6238 titanium grey :D

I use a 'noodle' - one of those foam rubber things kids lay with in swimming
pools. It's soft, doesn't scrathch, has about a3" diameter and bends easily
for fitting around other stuff in the boot. Only disadvantage is a limited
range of colurs - after reflection, I chose purple to go with metallic green -
my daughter thinks it's cool, anyway!

Hee hee, funny with the comment about the bike. Reminds me of a guy who was
in the Chch club a few years back - he must have been pushing eighty years
old, and had a beautiful Merlot MX5. When he sold it, he said he was
getting "too long in the tooth" for the MX5, and he was going to get a
motorbike instead. His wife rarely accompanied him in his MX5, so I think
he'd feel less abandoned on the bike, than with the empty seat next to him.

There was another one who sold him MX5 a year after he bought it, saying it
was a mid-life-crisis car ... I certainly hope yours will be around longer
than that.

Ciao

Kate
