Thinking of buying a second-hand homologated roll-bar which is currently up
for sale, so I can use the MX5 on the occasional track-event.
In discussing the item with the seller, he mentions the matter of the
height. The MANZ regs require there to be a certain minimum clearance
between the bar and the top of one's helmet, so the bar has to be of a
sufficient height, depending on how tall you are. The seller said a 5 foot
two driver was known to be OK with the bar in question, but may not have had
much to spare. However I'm 5 foot 3-1/2 so I could be very marginal or
non-compliant.
The easy answer is to fit a higher bar and not have to worry about
clearance, but then you couldn't use your soft top, as the seller explains
that the bar currently in question is as high as one can be for a soft top
to be used.
So, who else has fitted MANZ-approved roll bars please, how tall are you,
and can you still use your soft top? We see in the TOP DOWN of June 2003
that Simon's article advises you can be up to 175cm tall and still fit
compliantly under a soft-top-compatible roll-bar. Is everyone happy with
this figure please?
Simon's article also advises that if you don't fit, you'll have to lower
your backside closer to the floor. Are there ways to do this without forking
out for a race seat? (Spacers which can be removed, perhaps?)
Regards & thanks,
Joan Hilder

I seem to remember someone telling me ages ago (was probably on this
list)that they had removed some of the padding from the standard seat
base to give them a lower seating position. It was apparently a simple
exercise

Actually I think I read it at miata.net.
Here is the link below. It apparently gave the articles author another
inch of headroom.

I have a MANZ approved bar in my race car which is OK with the soft top
(just). I am 5ft 8 in. I have a race seat on the driver's side but am
still OK on the passengers side with the standard seat.

Great Keith, sounds like I shouldn't really have too much of a problem then
being a mere 5'3"!
