For those interested, it is possible to get a thermostat that opens at a
cooler temperature. The normal one opens at about 88 degrees C but this one
opens at about 76 deg. For the BP 1800cc, the Tridon part number is
TT240-170. Not sure if the 1600 is the same.
There has been some debate on Miata.Net about how much they help as the ECU
uses water temperature as one of its measurements but in theory they should
help a performance engine to stay a bit cooler.
