A real pity, I thought we had got over this one.
Since there are those amongst us who like to justify their position by using
out of context quotations, let me give you one, from the front page of the
"instruction book" for something really fast, for which I once had a licence,
The Learjet 35.
"Superior Flying consists of the exercise of Superior Judgement, to avoid the
unecessary use of Superior Skill"
It seems to me that this applies equally to superior driving.
It therefore follows that, if one does not exercise superior judgement, then
whether one posseses or uses "Superior Skills" or otherwise, one cannot
describe oneself as a "Superior Driver"
Are we, in this case, using superior judgement?
Consider the facts,
1. The legal speed limit, like it or not, is 100 km/h
2. The penalty for travelling at 170 km/h is likely to be in excess of $1000
and a minimum 6 month walk
3. The effect of this penalty on one's life and business, even if the fine is
a mere bagatelle to you, is likely to be far more costly
4. Your margin for error at that speed is miniscule, your margin for anyone
else's error is non existent
5 Any mishap in an MX5, at that speed, will, if you are lucky, be fatal, if
you are not lucky it will probably involve a lifetime of pain and suffering,
and, what is worse, regret.
6. The effect of such a mishap on one's family and loved ones is devastating
and irrecoverable.
As many of you know, I have some little experience in this area. I have
explained the effects of 4, 5 & 6 to a number of very recent widows.
Is placing one'self deliberately in this position "exercising superior
judgement"? If it is not, then, plainly, the person who advocates this is not
a "Superior Driver" and since he is not, why are we bothering with his
opinions?
That, I am sure you will be pleased to know, is my last comment on the
subject.
Regards to you all
Eric West

hmm... my original post seems to have been blocked.
So here is a cut and paste with a slight amendment - sorry if I end up double
posting.
===================
I know I said we should keep it friendly, but ...(and I know that this may
get me banned - but hey)
Bill, you are possibly a simpleton or a f__kwit - but the fact that you are
unhinged is obvious to all but yourself.
I know in your warped, distorted view of reality you really believe what you
wrote. This changes it from being funny to being sad.
Good luck with your driving - with your skill I am sure you will get the
drivers seat in the A1 series.
Should you crash (caused by someone without your god-like skills) I only hope
that you don't take out anyone else with you.
Chris.

To all who are "black or white" thinkers: Dr David D Burns would have a field
day with you!
Contrary to those of you who apparently think in only "black or white" terms
(and are likely Green or Labour Party members as well). Look at this issue
from a factual perspective:
1. An MX5 IS capable of SAFELY travelling at 170kms/hr
2. There ARE SOME roads in NZ where you CAN safely be driven at 170kms/hr -
and in the process only place at risk the driver's welfare - just like being
on a track
3. AND, there ARE SOME people who have the skills to drive an MX5 at that
speed without pissing in their pants or requiring a valium!
What makes #1 through #3 above fact? Simply because it HAS BEEN DONE, and it's
been done more than once. NOT on any or every day, NOT on any or every NZ
road, NOT every or at any time, NOT in any or every MX5, and NOT by any or
every MX5 driver!
I can't believe how so many people can repeatedly intellectually masturbate
this issue which has so many "shades of grey" and variables associated with
it. Yet these individuals zealously defend what is in reality nothing more
than their own personally biased, subjective opinion.
To those individuals this applies to feel free to have your personally biased,
subjective opinion. Also have fun typing away in your attempt to zealously
defend and/or justify that opinion. On the other hand, I might be forgiven for
thinking you have something in common with those who strap plastic explosives
around their waists and pull a detonator cord! It's just a matter of
degree...
May I suggest these "black or white" thinkers read Dr Burns highly regarded
handbook - an indispensable guide to help change thinking which also teaches
how to remove the mental obstacles that bar you from success.
PS: Speaking personally for myself, I would never expect to go to heaven or
for that matter would I suddenly scream "Allah is great" if ALL of #1 through
#3 above turned out not to be a reality at any one moment in time. Simply
because even a Space Shuttle can fail - of course it has over 2 million
moveable parts and there is something called "laws of probabilities".
