Customs tax on freight - new lesson learned.

Post by Mad Kiwi » Tue May 31, 2016 10:12 am

Needing new brake pads for Wee1 I ordered some Carbotechs from 949 racing.

As the front and rear pair pads together were over $400.00 NZ and would then get GST charged I paid separately for freight and invoicing so each package would be under the $400.00 threshold.

Despite being seperate invoices AND boxes, Customs in their wisdom have deemed them to be together and charged me for GST. Apparently there has to be at least/more than a week between each package before they won't do that.

Just thought this might help someone else for overseas orders.

Ouch, they seem to be quite random. Have had people get things in over $400 and not get stung with GST.

If you get the seller to mark them as warranty replacement items you are exempt from paying duty :)

Ask them to use the wholesale or trade price on the stickon declaration to keep it under $400 threshold. It only asks for the value..not what you pay for it. Most companies are happy to oblige on the basis you will be a returning customer if they keep you happy.
