Other 4cyl engine swaps
So I've been looking into quad throttle bodies and all that's required and it seems like there is a fair bit involved, and then you come away with less than 150hp still. Yet just taking a whole 4AGE will gain a lot more power, for not to much more money.
Has anyone done the swap, or a B16a or anything like that?

If you are going to swap something in you are better off going V6 or V8. Just swapping in another 4 cylinder is a waste of time, effort and money.
There is a complete forum on miata.net dedicated to swaps. have a browse.

As much as it pains me to say it, if you want more power in your 5 and want to stay 4 cylinder, then bolt on a turbo or supercharger, it is the most cost effective solution.

TG Sports, classic roadster - modern technology. NA1800, 99 head, 11:1 +2mm Wiseco pistons, Link LEM, Alloy f/wheel, JR headers.
Yeah, obviously a turbo is pretty straight forward power gain option. But I was more hoping to see some NA 4cyls. Definitely would never go V8 or V6 and I prefer atmo, but your right, probably just settle for a turbo.
Is there any difference in strength between the 1.8 and the 1.6? Everyone seems to turbs the 1.6 but that could just be because they are more common?

Probably better off turbocharging a 1.8L for obvious reasons, but most people turbocharge the 1.6L because it's what they've got, and don't want to fork out for a 1.8L plus the turbo kit on top of that.
If you're buying an engine anyway to do the turbo, start with a 1.8L. I know I'd love to pick up a BP to build turbo in my spare time.

I'd stick with the 1600. They respond really well to a turbo, in part because they're a very very similar engine to the familiar turbo engines. They're already quite low compression so can handle a decent whack of boost and they're strong and easy to find if you blow one up.
I'm actually about to build up my spare 1600 motor into a dedicated turbo engine with forged pistons and stronger rods (the two weakest links as far as these engines go).
For a 1600 they're pretty torquey, especially with a turbo bolted on!

I've battled in the NA minefield before, I spent thoooousands on my N15 VZR with a 2L engine build. As satisfying as 230hp from a 2L NA engine was, the wind was always blown from my sails when I was struggling to keep up with guys who spent 1/3 of the money by bolting a turbo to a stock engine.
NA is one of those "fun but frustrating" kind of goals.
