Knocking when reversing

Post by Skilfil » Thu Jan 05, 2012 1:49 pm

1.6 1990 NA Manual, when going backwards I hear what I'm sure is the diff knocking. Doesn't matter if the car is in gear or not, seems to have gotten louder recently. Possible need to check diff level?

Does the knocking get faster the more you go faster?
Initial responce - I would check drive shafts into the diff from the wheels. (I have know these to pop out from the circlip [diff end]) when driving through tall grass - grass gets wrapped around axle [From a day of gymkhana's mind!]).
Wheel nuts? These can come loose! Check the four bolt at the diff end of the drive shaft?
Is the exhaust hitting something that is rotating cuasing the knocking?
Just my two cents worth...

Cheers for the list, will be checking all of those. Won't be the wheel bolts as between now and when I first heard it I've had the back wheels off and tightened that all up myself.

And yeah it goes faster the faster I go, only in reverse funnily enough.

did you work this one out?

I'm thinking growler is on the right track.

The diff twists a bit with the torque which can cause it to come into contact with something, I had this problem when I installed a 7" diff.
