M45 supercharger build on 1.6 NA

Post by warrior » Sat Sep 03, 2011 11:15 am

Right I have bitten the bullet and decided to put a M45 supercharger on my car. I do not have a kit so will be buliding and buying what I can to get the job done.

Have I bitten off more than I can chew? Maybe!

Thought I would put pictures etc on here so anyone else wanting to do the same can get some help and learn from my stuff ups.

I am guessing this will take a while to finish so here we go.

First a couple of pictures of the car it is going onto. It is a 1991 1.6 NA. The engine is standard with only good oil, good plugs and a home made air intake. I have a cold air inlet from the headlight which will stay. The car goes well but I want more POWER!

I would like another 50hp which should be easy enough.

So far I have a M45 supercharger, the bypass valve and a dummy throttle body on its way. I can get most parts from the states but will need to build all the brackets.

Here are some pics of the parts I have so far. I know I have got a long way to go but thought I would put as much as possible on here to help anyone else out that might like to do the same. Any questions please ask and any help you can give I would welcome it.

The 1st picture of the bypass valve I bought from Moss motors...I will be getting about half of the items from them and about half from trackdog racing. Why the difrent suppliers? its just a price thing as they have quite varing prices.

I am in the states in the next few weeks so will be getting a lot of parts delivered to the hotel to save on freight costs.

Both trackdog and moss and been good but it takes quite a few days for them to reply to any E mails.

Cant think of much else to say at this stage but I will update as I get more parts and start the build.

Hi,
I am just starting ( today ) to fit a complete Fast forward M62 Super charger kit ( cold side ) to my NB model.
The complete kit is amazing with the stuff included.
Once fitted it should have close on 200HP.
I enjoy the car , just a little more power is required !!

still waiting on a few parts for this build, fitted a high flow fuel pump the other day and the 160d thermostat will go in next weekend. While I am doing that I will fit the plastic inlet manifold gasket that I have. It is ment to be good for 5hp alone so will see what happens.

I have new stainless headers and a jacson racing stainless muffler ready to go in so just need to find a good exhaust shop to make a middle section pipe for me also in stainless.

Will post some pics of exhaust etc soon

Where did you get the 160F thermostat? I'm thinking about this for my turbo because she gets a bit hot at the track after a few laps

M45 supercharger build on 1.6 NA

Yeah I'm pretty sure a turbo engine puts out more heat than a OEM single row radiator can reject !  The Mazda engineers made just big (and therefore light) enough to cope with the stock engine...

Supercharger

Post by busterboyd » Sun Nov 20, 2011 5:13 pm

My FFS cold side supercharger M62 kit has been performing perfectly and I am happy to advise any one , the only way to go.
It was a straight fit , plug and go operation.
Yet to be put on a dyno but I am sure the 190-200HP at the wheels claimed is true yet the wife drives the car every day , she likes it , no need to change down to pass !! :D
I enjoy the car , just a little more power is required !!

Not sure if they do a 160, but Tridon do a 170 that I have been using in the TG. Got it from BNT.

Just a point to note though, if your cooling system can't cope with a 180 or a 190, it is still going to struggle with a 160. All the 160 does is open sooner to let cooler water flow through. It won't stop it overheating, it might just give you a few more minutes before it does.

Right have my stainless headers and jackson racing muffler going into the car next week...pics soon. Question should I wrap the headers with exhaust wrap? I have heard good and bad about this.

I also have a TRACKDOG heat shield that will go over the exhaust. I will ask the exhaust shop (als mufflers) but would like your opions as well.

No don't wrap them. I've had nothing but problems with wrapped headers. The things rusted out big time and kept splitting. Get them coated with HPC although their Hypercoat is pretty expensive... My engine bay was a lot cooler with the standard coat than it ever was with the exhaust wrap.
