Soon to be boosted .....
Well – with a bit of luck (as long as I get the time over the next few weekends) I hope to have the old girl turbo’ed by the end of the month.
As some of you will know, I have been wanting to do this for a looooong time - its really exciting (and a little scary) to actually be so close.
One of the things I am thinking of doing is taking my time and taking pics of each stage of the installation and coming up with a ‘dyi turbo’ for dummies paper for anyone wanting to give this a go themselves. By no means will this be a replacement for your own study and could be best described by the “Don’t follow me – I’m lost” bumper sticker – but if there is interest please let me know – I’m more than happy to do it – I just don’t want to put in lots of effort if its of no use to anybody.
This has ultimately ended up more expensive that the route I was originally heading (I was going pretty much completely DYI) – however I think that the end result will give me a car that is more in keeping with my objectives.
My delivery is due to arrive on Wednesday (hurry up FEDEX) – but I ended up with the following:
• Full replacement Link ECU with FM’s latest chip (inc. knock, keypad, laptop connector, elec. boost controller)
• Innovate LC-1 Wideband (gauges etc as well)
• FM3 turbo manifold (with capped external wastegate port)
• GT2554R turbo (garrett ball-bearing turbo). no play, low mileage MS protege turbo. checked and cleaned, like new.
Turbo is completely dressed: billet wastegate bracket, NEW wastegate actuator (7-8psi), new coolant fittings with 6-AN fitting to aircraft-grade aluminum tubing (to move lines away from heat), NEW oil braided SS oil feed line WITH all -AN fittings to and from the engine to turbo (including fitting to the engine block). NEW billet oil drain and gasket with 10-AN SS braided drain line (10-AN to 1/2" NPT oil pan adapter included).
• FM2 downpipe
• BRAND NEW BEGI (Bell Engineering) intercooler system
• BEGI ‘dustpan’ air intake setup (Very cool – excuse the pun)
• New BEGI heatshield
• RX7 460cc injectors
Will have a 2.5” straight thru exhaust with a HKS super dragger muffler keeping the noise down to (hopefully) legal levels.
All supporting mods (Chassis bracing, larger brakes, new Koni Suspension, rollbar) have been added.

sounds like a good setup ... is it like JasonC's?
you may think it's expensive now, but it's cheaper than doing it twice! ;-]

Change the fuel filter is a good idea….
Where is the fuel filter?
Was it easy to change?
Can you remember about how much for a new one?
Cheers

Where is the fuel filter? under the car, drivers side, by the rear axle, sits behind a sheild. you should be able to see it from the back of the car when looking from the back.
Was it easy to change? very easy to change, however make sure you clamp off the fuel line by the filter or you really will need to be quick. petrol everywhere is no a good thing.
Can you remember about how much for a new one? about $20.
Cheers

Thanks, but where is it mounted?
And was it an easy job?
I have no issue with aftermarket parts over original.

I hate to think why I would need to do it twice .
In regard to the other question about fuel pump - I will be running the larger 460 cc injectors so I "Think" that I can retain the standard fuel pump (although changing the filter is a good idea). Either way I will be logging to dataloglab and will see what the readings are - its an easy change if I need to do it.

It is a fiddly job to do given the lack of space under the car. The point about clamping off the lines is well made. The manuals detail how to purge the fuel lines for the same reason. If you do not do this, what will seem at the time, a lot of petrol will cascade down your arms leaving you feeling more than a little uncomfortable - or so I have heard.

Jif - Yep - very similar to JasonC's (now I know who you are talking about ) I do not know what ECU he is running but I am hoping for figures in line with what he is running.
