repower SR20ve

Post by silver bullet » Thu Apr 24, 2014 6:16 pm

Spent last winter on a repower project for the MX. Decided to go with an SR20ve due to the stock 180hp and huge aftermarket support. Not to mention the ali block for a bit of weight saving. Did all the fabrication in my shed and had someone else do the aluminium welding for me. One of the biggest jobs was the header construction, close to 40 hours there.

Interesting swap, what gearbox did you have to use? I assume the mx5 one so you could keep the ppf

Yep, kept the MX5 box and PPF all in their standard locations.
I made an adaptor plate and bolted the plate to the engine then the gearbox to the plate. The flywheel is a bit of a freak in that I used the MX5 one with the ring gear removed and machined down to just enough to bolt the clutch to. I kept the Nissan ring gear and made a boss which bolts to the crank and carries the flywheel.
Had to make a rear sump and pick up to avoid chopping any chassis etc.
I also fitted up AE86 throttle bodies and am only running an altenator with the front pully as theres now an electric water p/p.

How far forward does it sit compared to a stock block?

The block is 16mm forward (16mm ali plate) but with it being an alluminium block the weight distribution is still good.
Dodgey or not it's done a day of dual sprints at hampton, 4 hillclimbs, a street sprint (double run) and a full day on the dyno tuning the link. And general thrashing about.

go to postimage.net and upload the image, once uploaded, copy the 2nd result (labelled "Direct link") and then in this thread click the IMG button, paste the link and the click the IMG button again.

it will look something like this:
(I added full stops to the img tags so that it would show the code instead of displaying the image)

I dont think you are able to post pics as a new member till you have placed a certain number of posts. I think it is 5 or close to it. Soon you should be able to. I remember getting frustrated in the early days. Once I could they need to be loaded in reverse order to display in desired sequencing.( with an IPad at least)

Ah ha, cheers for that Gruvbb. I've got some good photos of the project and thought I'd have a go at putting them on here. Just about to give up on it though.

Hey thanks very much for putting that up.
Yea I'm happy as with the result, describing what I did to get here is hard but the picture spells it out.

 This has always been my ideal swap to do, love the VE motors and always thought the N/A power would be a great match for the MX5 chassis.

Let me know what event you're going to next at Hampton Downs/Pukekohe I'd love to come and check it out, I've always just written it off into the too hard basket due to the fabrication involved.

OK, here's an early one with just a plate bolted over the bottom of the block so I could have a look at what had to happen here for it all to fit.
