Heat reflecting mat.

Post by Mad Kiwi » Wed Jan 23, 2013 11:33 am

Hi Guys, as I slowly get my car sorted I am getting to the stage of trying to make it more comfortable to daily drive after throwing all the ex race gear in it.

One of the issues is serious heat radiation throught the sides of the gearbox tunnel, especially on the passenger/ exhaust side.

I have been looking around for heat reflective cloth and most are in the $100 - $150 / sq metre range. I really want around 2m and that is a lot of money for something that might not solve the problem......

Just wondering if anyone has any "cheap" alternatives.....?

Tin foil?

Maybe make up a stainless skin to surround that area(Similar to the stock ones?)

Your missing carpet to though?

The price is about right I think I paid about 30 bucks per square foot for the stuff I laid in my passenger footwell.

You could also look at the bendable aluminium sheet stuff and attach it to the inside of the tunnel.

Why not heat wrap the exhaust in that segment? It would probably be a lot cheaper.

As per another thread here (i think)...My experience with a heat wrapped down pipe was that the metal started to go brittle and turn in to flakes and research proved this to be quite common.

Do you think further back, end of the down pipe to mid car would have the same problem?

Because it is a good idea if it doesn't shorten the life of the pipe.....(thank you!)

If you spray the pipe with a high temp silicone sealant before applying the heat wrap it's supposed to cure this issue, plus it sort of "glues" the heat wrap together so it works far better. That being said I've only heard this is an issue on stainless systems and doesn't have much of an effect on mild steel.
