Gearbox and diff oil

Post by warrior » Wed Jul 11, 2012 10:51 am

Ok time to change the diff and gearbox oil....this is what I am going to use from recomendation of FLYIN MIATA

GEARBOX: REDLINE MTL 3 QUARTS

DIFF: REDLINE GEAR OIL 1 QUART

Any comments you have would be great

One question....I am going to cange the oil in the gearbox turret as well but how much does it take in mm? Cant seem to find it anywhere and also does it just go into the hole that the gearlever goes into?

Gearbox capacity is 2 litres. Most people tend to use Redline MT90. A good synthetic SAE80W/90 that meets API GL4 or GL5 should be fine.

From memory you only need about 30ml of oil in the shift turret.

The Mazda NA workshop manual specifies the following for the diff
Above -18*C : API GL5, SAE 90
Below -18*C : API GL5, SAE80W
Capacity: 0.65 litre
TG Sports, classic roadster - modern technology. NA1800, 99 head, 11:1 +2mm Wiseco pistons, Link LEM, Alloy f/wheel, JR headers.

yeah I have heard that most use MT90 but FLYING MIATA dont recommend it for road use only racing use as they say it only works well when hot.

I've been meaning to do the turret oil in my car for a while now. I guess I just remove the gear knob, remove console and then find some hole to suck oil out of and top up?

I also have the big and small boots that I've been meaning to replace at the same time, is this self explanatory once I've pulled everything out?

yeah done the boots and they are easy, just soak the old oil up with a rag then pour in the new oil......about 30ml from what has been said on here

You need to remove the gear lever to top up the turret. If there is oil in there I wouldn't bother with sucking it out, it is not under any stress. You just need to make sure that there is a bit in there.

The big boot needs to come off to get access to the turret. The small boot is held in place by the same bolts that hold the gear lever in place. You may need to cut off the small one and then slide the new one down over the gear lever. A bit of detergent or vegetable oil might help to slide it on.

Yes. Did those a couple of months ago but haven't done the turret yet. I've got all the boots sitting in the garage but just got lazy...

Thanks. Might get onto it before summer if all goes to plan and I stop being lazy

Any idea of the cost of the rubber boots? Mine has a crack which opens up when the stick is facing rearward which introduces a bit of gearbox and road noise into the cabin (NB 6 Spd)

Just a heads up on oil. The new oil to use which is supposed to be even better than redline, is motorcraft fully synthetic. Not cheap and only available from ford dealers. It is supposed to be the magic oil for manual gearboxesthere has been a huge shift from redline over to motorcraft in the last year or so.
I think mobil 1 has become the diff oil of choice now for non lsd diffs

I havent noticed any difference on the road with Redline oil in the gearbox compared to ordinary oil....yet to see if it makes a difference on the track though!
