Driveshaft safety loops

Post by WideOpenThrottle » Fri May 18, 2012 4:22 pm

Drive-shaft safety loops
2.5. A front-engine, rear-wheel drive low volume vehicle that has undergone
an engine conversion, or has had its factory-fitted engine significantly
modified, such that a significant increase in power or torque has resulted,
must be fitted with an effective 360-degree front drive-shaft loop,
mounted within 150 mm rearward of each front drive-shaft universal.

So does any one know the min sizes of plate?... as i have some 25mm x 3mm flat mild steel lying around.

Yup! :D

Will I require LVV certification if I increase the power of my engine?
LVV certification will be required if the increase in power is more than 20%. Adding a supercharger or turbocharger automatically requires certification

the mx5 runs the same driveshaft unis as the RX7 which came with a 13B turbo, so i think theyll be up to the job. certainly no more risk than any other RWD car without a hoop.

I wonder how that is going to go with my one, sure I am tripling the HP rating of the what the MX5 body had in there, but all the engine/trans/running gear is all stock Holden HSV (well apart from the shortened driveshaft and axles), so in theory nothing have be upgraded as far as that is concerned, it just happens to be in a different body. Guess time will tell.

With the driveshaft being shortened, ie cut and welded, i can imagine they will definately require the driveshaft hoop.

I got away with a length of 6mm stainless wire rope stretched across the tunnel.
