Help a canuck find some roads in Bay of plenty.

Post by Lee The CI » Tue Feb 17, 2009 10:32 am

Good morning everybody.
I need a lttle help finding some good roads around Mt Maunganui / Tauranga. I work onboard a cruise ship and the next time we are in port I am going to rent a boxster for the day (it wont be the same as my supercharged 2000 Mx-5 that is hibernating in Vancouver but it is the best I could find) and what I need is some suggestions on where to go. I will have about 6 hours of freedom to find some good roads and quench my thirst for driving as I havent operated a motor vehicle in 4 months.
Your help is needed :)
Thanks
Lee

in that time frame i would go down to the Manawahae road that goes between Matata and one of the Rotorua lakes. i would go from Mount maunganui through Te puke to Matata, then along the manawahae road to the lakes then in to rotorua and back to tauranga.

Either that or travel North to the coromandel. Go to waihi then through the gorge to Paeroa then over to Whanagamata then back to waihi. (make sure you stop at Whiritoa) then back to tauranga

As Slydit says (in that time frame i would go down to the Manawahae road that goes between Matata and one of the Rotorua lakes. i would go from Mount maunganui through Te puke to Matata, then along the manawahae road to the lakes then in to rotorua and back to tauranga. ) but make sure you come back from Rotorua to Tauranga via the "back road" (Thru Pyes Pa)

Thanks for the advice everybody, I got a map and am planning the day.
THey rent "exotics" right on the pier in Mt Maunganui where our ship docks. They have a reg boxster, 87 911 cab, 93 911 turbo, 79 ferrari 308, and another older 911.

Don't forget the speed limit here is 100km, and they are sneaky little devils.

Slydits plan seems good. The "up & down each side of the coromandel peninsula-lovely roads & great scenery" is more scenic but a lot more tight windy roads and potentially more traffic holdups on weekends.
