MX5 a hairdressers car

Post by johngalt » Wed Oct 21, 2009 9:24 pm

 What is with the label 'hairdressers car'? Why was the mx5 chosen for this title. The lotus elan certainly didn't get this name. Everytime Trademe message board starts the debate mgf v mx5 etc the name calling starts. I see more and more older guys driving these, even when i bought mine, the owner (a guy) said all the lookers were guys and not a hairdresser in sight. Are we more long sighted and not only see the future of these cars but also appreciate how much fun these are. What are your thoughts?

Only the red ones seem to fit that stereotyped description.

Here we are, other so-called "hairdressers cars":
Audi TT,
Toyota Altezza,
Mazda FD RX7,
Mazda RX8,
"Clapped out" ( V.I.P) Automatic transmissioned BMW and Mercedes' lowered on big chrome wheels with a big whore exhaust.
and the Honda S2000....... go figure

This should be calculated scientifically. Type name of car and the word hairdresser in to google, and count hits:

S2000 4640
Boxster 12,800
Z3 13,700
mx5 23,100
Corvette 40,600
MGF 45,200
z4 47,900
SLK 49,200
Ferrari 67,200
Hummer 67,800
Beetle 88,400
MG 118,000
TT 124,000
Mini 843,000

So if 750,000 Mx5 were made so far, then only 2.9% are hairdresser's cars. How many Hummers were made?

Maybe the name came into being by the way your hair gets a make-over when driving topless!!!!!!!
Unless you are Telly Saliva then you will only get an air-brushed polish-eh?

There are endless gay and hairdresser jokes when I bring it to the workshop. Strangely, it doesn't look too out of place parked amongst the race cars, probably because it's so small!

I think it comes from the dimunitive look/size of them, was driving behind an NA in the Xtrail and I was surprised at how tiny it looked on the road!

I quite like the unassuming reputation it has tbh.

If the price my wife pays for haircuts is a guide, yep, hairdressers can drive Ferraris. After that, with what's left over in the bank account, I can't afford a haircut any more, so my wife has to do it for free.

So my hairdresser drives an MX5.
