I thought the term was "head-lights", not "headlights, but I'm not in
the industry. Any thoughts out there?

I think you will find the term is 'headlights'. Head lights refer to lights
on a headland for navigation warning purposes, similar to a lighthouse
(which presumably can be a head light if it is on a headland!).
The Collins dictionary only lists headlight (or headlamp) as being the
correct term for vehicle use.
'Tail-light' or 'tail lamp' is what they list for the rear facing lights.
They do not list 'tail light' or 'taillight' at all.
Does it matter? No! Do we care? Not really. At least it has brought some
activity to the list!
Proves the original post was correct.
Grant.

Anally retentive is surely good when one considers the alternative...
