Replacing Syncro's in transmission

Post by Tim Chu » Fri Jan 07, 2005 12:41 pm

Hi All,

Just got my MX5 serviced, and I got North Harbour Mazda to check my gearbox
because it was a bit tough with selecting 3rd gear. It turns out that the
syncro's need to be replaced in the transmission and they reckon its going
to be about a 12hr jobbie at about a total cost of $1000!

The guy at North Harbour Mazda said it wasn't really an urgent problem and
there is at least another 6-12 months left in the syncros.

Has anybody had this problem before and if so how much did it cost you to
get the problem fixed? Can it be with a home handy man jobbie?

Thanks!

Yes, mines a 6spd.

I dunno...its a weird thing. It still goes fine, just sometimes a bit
knotchy when selecting 3rd guy (esp when down shifting) and sometimes
reverse. Its been like that for most of the 10,000km's I've had the car
(basically since I've had it).

Maybe its not the syncro and I need to get a second opinion on the
problem???

... specifically to transfer funds back into their NZ bank account?
I'd be interested in hearing experiences.

It was from selling a FM-Link computer, so it's kinda MX5 related ;)

I take it youve got a 6 speed??
Id check that the clutch fluid is ok. Change the fluid
and bleed ALL the air out out before comitting to a
gearbox change. often the seals on the hydaulic
cylinder at the gearbox leak, causing a sticky shift.
I certainly wouldnt try to rebuild a gearbox, i think
it falls into the "better to pay someone else than
loose all your hair" category.

another thing worth mentioning.
the gearbox in my '89 1600 failed in 2001.
the mazda dealership in greenlane took 9 weeks to repair it as the
parts were not in NZ and mazda NZ sea freighted them.
of course by the time i complained to mazda NZ (i think 6 weeks in)
airfreight wouldn't have been faster.
it may pay to enquire how the parts are coming if from japan...
