Panel lights

Post by RD5T3R » Wed Nov 16, 2005 5:42 pm

Hi Guys
We drove home in the dark the other day and realised we had no lights on the
temperature control panel or the hazard flashers/pop-up headlights bit. All
the area above the radio is in darkness. Is this normal or should it be lit?

Sounds daft but its the first time we needed the heater and I couldn't see it
clearly!

Look forward to your answers (makes a change from the Red/BRG stuff too
thankfully...)

What no takers??

Someone must know if the panel above the radio [normally] has lights or not -
please!

Still I am glueing the whole nacelle above the speedo, etc, back together as
the previous owner had broken every lug off. No wonder it rattled... Perhaps
I just have to rag the dash apart to find out?

Or is it because this isn't another BRG/Red question!!

I just had a look at our NA (BRG!). There are lights in the heater panel so
that lights up. It's a bit too bright outside at present to tell, but I
don't remember the hazard or headlight pop up switches being lit.

Hi Stu

I assume that you are referring to the heater control panel?

Do you have an NA or an NB, mine is an NA and, if nobody has given you a
definitive answer by tonight, when Ann gets home with the car, I will turn the
lights on and check.

I am pretty sure that it does light up, but it's one of those stupid things
like looking at your watch face, you have seen it so many times, that you are
not sure what it looks like!

A silly question but how does one tell if you have a NA or NB

Not a silly question the short answer being if it has pop up lights its an NA
(1989-1997) and if it was manufactured in or after 1998 and has fixed
headlights its an NB (up till this year which is now NC)

So what have you got Keith?

The NA is the early car (1989-1997) with pop-up lights
The NB is the later car with fixed headlights (1997-2005)
The very latest car is the NC, which looks more like an NA with fixed lights.

Hi Stu, my car is not with me so I can't check, but I suggest that if
someone has access to the Haynes manual (mine is at home) - have a look
at the electrical schematic.

I'm pretty sure the hazard button has a lamp in it, as I've heard of
people pulling them apart for BRB starters and having nightmares putting
all the bits back together again.

The problem is that looking at other cars won't always help - these
bulbs tend to only last a few years, and often people don't realise they
were even there so don't replace them...

cheers

Have just gone into a darkened garage to answer this question!

Mine is a 1997 NA, so one of the last of that model. The radio lights up,
the heater panel lights up, the fan speed control lights up and the a/c
button lights up.

The hazard warning button also lights up. The 'lights off' pop-up button
does not light up. It may be that a bulb has gone in this but it would seem
quite logical for it not to be an illuminated button.

It appears we have a mix of do's and don'ts, I guess, we don'ts need to do
some bulb replacements then we become do's, but do we really need to do it
to be a do? (Follow that do we?)<or don't we?>

Well Guys - thank You
The general feedback is the whole lot lights up - or should do!

No doubt when I rewire the radio to go off when the ignition does I will sort
the lack of lights out too.

Thanks again

Hopefully the definitive answer!

All of the switches on my '94, including hazards, pop-up lights, heater and
cigarette lighter, all light up.

It seems reasonable to assume that everybody else's should too!

Hi Stuart

If you need them, wiring diagrams can be found here although they can be a
bit tricky to read unless you enlarge them. There are specific pages for
radio wiring. Only thing to remember is that they are for US model (LHD)
and may be a little different to what you have.

Stuart, I downloaded the '99 wiring sheets from Madracki and have found them
a reasonable guide for my '98 NB import. I found a few errors, and you have
to be well aware of the LHD vs RHD changes. They are for the US market, so
some features are missing and extra ones are there. eg, panel light dimmer
and clutch interlock switching (must depress clutch to start). I agree, they
really need to be printed on A3 sheets for clarity.
