have had the same issue and got around it on several occasions.

A style bar is a device that is used for looks only - normally just
bolting onto the seatbelt mounts. Look nice, but offers zero
protection. Some say that you are actually worse off in a rollover
situation - who knows, either way you're in trouble.

A roll bar is structural and needs to be certified. It is welded into
the car. If you end upside down it will support the weight of the car.

You are really looking at $700 to $900 for a good certified rollbar
setup. A stylebar you can get for next to nothing.

I think those style bars look the part. Quite racey looking. Might put one in
if they're cheap. If you see a cheap one let me know? p.s I just bought a cool
Momo steering wheel copy on trademe black and red. I'm hoping it'll make the
car drive faster. Op sss! there I go again.

OK - being more helpful with my reply this time ... ;-)

quote: oh come on dude how can it offer zero protection

ground. and 2 handles so well

It offers zero protection as it is simply mounted by two bolts that were not
designed to hold it. You will find that you can move a lot of them with your
hands.

I've never personally rolled one (or any car) - but accidents do happen - even
on MX5 club runs (search the site)

quote: thats ridiculous to say has to be weled yeah right
is the a engine welded into the car. nooo
l say you right if your racing a car at 80-100%
throttle all day but this is the public roads

The question was what is the difference between a style and rollbar - the
answer does not depend on how you use it. All rollbars need to be certified
and will need to be welded.

Lunatic, I disagree, you can roll a car at as little as 50km/hr.

For example lose the back end on an off camber corner in the wet, clip a
curb and if you're lucky you will jump it but if not you're over and wishing
your style bar was a real roll bar. I have pretty average tyres (ie the ones
that came with it) and IMHO they are lethal if the road is damp.

Second scenario, 80 to 100km/hr round a normal bend on the open road
(Stopping distance = quite a long way), there's a spot of sand or gravel,
car slides a little, hit's a pot-hole (not that we have any on our lovely
roads, or sand or gravel for that), tyres a little soft perhaps and the rim
digs in, and over you go... Learnt all this on some advanced driving thing
at Bay Park many years back, rolling a car even a low COG one is easier than
you think in the right (or wrong) circumstances.

You don't have to be a lunatic to roll a car, sometimes just plain unlucky,
as we all know sh*t happens.

I have a style bar but often think of how nice it would feel to sit below a
roll bar.

Good point Chris on the rollbar vs style bar,
I had the Deuce Roll Bar from Hard Dog and as the name says it is the
real deal. I paid $420 for it, but then it was powdercoated black.
Other thing about the roll bar is that it stiffens up the car
seriously if that is what you are after too, so no need for a cockpit
brace then. The style bar is attached and will slightly stiffen up
the car. Saving for a roll bar is not a bad idea at all...

Hey Chrissy.

eBay is your friend - a lot of people buy stuff
off it and resell over
here at a good profit.

Here is a link to some for sale -
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mazda-Mi ... Style-Bar-
Polished-9
1-94-95-
01_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33631QQitemZ8011476488QQrdZ1QQsspa
genameZWDVW

With a buy now price of $79USD (new) - with
surface shipping you will
come in well under the $450 mark. Else you could
have some made up.

Just to be clear this is a stylebar - not a
rollbar. It will offer no
protection should you roll.

There is an augment about the 'mouse trap' effect
if you roll your car
with a style bar as opposed to a real roll bar -
personally I wouldn't
put another stylebar on my car (I did have one,
once), but would save my
$$$ for a rollbar.

Good shopping.

Rollbars - was MX5's for sale on Trade Me

Post by ianbell » Wed Nov 09, 2005 7:24 am

Hi
My recent experience with roll bars is that I have just fitted on and got it
LVV certed. Style bars are just pretty but serve no purpose in a roll-over,
hence they do not need certification. My roll bar is bolted in, not welded.
The car is hugely different to drive. Its an NA model and all the body
rattles and flexing instantly disappeared the day it was fitted. I have
written an article for the magazine that I hope gets published about the
experience and where to look for a roll bar for free and how to get it LVV
Certed

Glenn,

This thread started from a new user mistaking a style bar for a roll bar
- They then asked what is the difference - a fairly reasonable question
given the nature of the forum.

OK - it has moved on a bit with people debating the benefits (or not) of
each - but again that is reasonable in this forum is it not?

I am amazed that people can shoot down a thread like this that covers
what (for some) is a interesting topic (or at least a reasonable
question from a new user) - but are happy to have HUGE threads on why
red is faster than BRG.

I must agree, in any mailing there will be things that are of no
interest to some people but are of intense interest (bordering on
religious fervour) to others.

And although whether red or BRG is faster may be debatable, there is
no debate that BRG has soo much more style than red :-)

Has anyone changed the steering wheel as I want to change mine and I was
wondering if they use lock tight glue on the screws as I'm having trouble
getting them off. Have sprayed with CRC so will wait a bit and have another

Perhaps extending the handle on the ratchet driver that you are using (by
using a section of pipe) or using a pinch bar with a long handle will give you
enough extra leverage to loosen the nut.

chris,
I wasnt trying to minimise the new buyers questions,
they were very valid and required a simple answer,
fair enough...
BUT to then have 20+ more replies going over the same
old ground on peoples personal opinions of "XYZ" style
or roll bars was just old hat. There are much better
things to talk about, and remember that the club is
paying for all these emails to be archived and the
more there are the more it costs us as a club.
I also dont get involved in the BRG debate that
seems to keep popping up either. :)

Any way the sun is up so im going for a cruise...

Hi Chrissy,

I would be a little careful applying too much force to the Allen headed
screws, you do not want to damage the sockets or you will never get the screws
out. I would be very careful about extending the handle of the allen key too
much and be sure that you use exactly the right size (3 mm) allen key.

One thing that can work is to get a small brass drift, essentially a short
piece of brass rod, (brass because it will not mark anything) that is smaller
in diameter than the head of the allen screw and giving the head of the screw
a smart tap using the drift and a hammer. The shock can loosen the threads and
can also break any cyanoacrylate glues, such as Loctite.

You can also try a moderate tap on the end of the allen key to move the end
anti-clockwise and "shock" the screw into turning, but make sure the key is
very well seated in the screw, and don't use a big hammer!

Hope this helps
