Insurance (again)
Insurance (again)
Hi all
my insurance is due, and I read some posts recently about the costs of insurance, and the pros and cons of each company.
My quote with NZI is 683 bucks, and I can't remember how much other folks' quotes were. Is this horrendous (considering I don't have an alarm (eh, Nicky??)) and am I being ripped off. Thoughts on NZI, if I recall were quite positive (although they do 'offer' me a special excess of 1000 dollars to any loss to the roof material :0)

Im with AMI and think it was about $450 with my full no claim discount.
Yes AMI also has a special extra excess for the 'roof' issue.

just got our state bill $450, $300 excess accident,$700 theft, mike
Insurance (again)
Try AA. Mine costs about $350 a year, certainly less than $400, and $250
excess on everything. I do have a 60% "no claims" bonus however, which makes
quite a difference. It would be $875 without it, so, if you do not have that
claims record, $683 is probably not too bad at all.
"10% of the insured value" is a common way of reckoning basic premiums for
many classes of insurance, aircraft and boats in particular, and I guess
$8750 is about the value of my 94 (10 x $875), so about 5% of the value of a
96 MX5, ($683 x20 = $13660) sounds a good deal as a basic premium
You must have an alarm and immobiliser before AA will insure you.
I have always found AA excellent to deal with, Ann had a minor "no fault"
accident in one of our other cars last year, and they were extremly diligent
in collecting our excess from the "at fault" party, so it cost us nothing
and their service was slendid.
Hope that helps

Hi G,
Think I mentioned I was with AA when I sent the alarm info (?) - and yes you do need an alarm and immobiliser with them but they insured me straight away and then gave me 3 months to get it installed (actually I "forgot" about it and got a polite reminder ;o)
My policy is $485 pa and is on agreed value of 10k (wishful thinking and should be adjusted), I think my no claims is 60% like Eric's tho.. They do also go on where you live so Eric being slightly out of town (and maybe/possibly his age) could be making him look the cheapest ) (no offence Eric)
Also re recent oil/filter discussions and the Mobil 1 fans - Supercheap has a SALE commencing today 4L @$64.99...
Cheers

I'm with AMI agreed value $9500, no claims 60% and $250 excess
Premium is $270.20 I don't recall them asking if the car was alarmed,
however it is.
We're at Paekakariki - a low premium area obviously
--- nothing to do with our over 50 status
Cheers Joan H

I'm also with NZI and that premium sounds pretty similar.
They told me there was definitely no extra excess (over the standard
$300) because it was a soft-top, including malicious damage...
Given that was the entire reason I switch to them, if they try and
spring a $1000 extra excess on me, I'm going to be very very unhappy.

Can anyone tell me what the market value of a 91 MX5 in great condition is.
My insurance is due for renewal, they rang me up as I haven't altered it for
the last three or four years.
Thanks

I'd be interested here as well.
My 91 BRG (with hardtop) is in theory has an agreed insurance value of $8300.
I'm gonna question that because that was the first I heard that was
the value (I wasn't consulted so how can it be agreed?), considering
it was insured for over $1500 more when I bought it last year.
How do they go about depreciating a car's values?
Enjoy.

I believe that this is because it has a dual core.

Insurance (again)
My 91 (red VG condition was originally insured for $10,000 agreed value
(2003-4). I had to supply a valuation from a dealer to get this value.
It was dropped down to $9500 for 2004-5 and this August was dropped again
to an "agreed value" of $8400 (2005-6)
I'd like to think it is worth more, but in reality I think that is probably
about right. I guess if I was not happy with this "agreed value" I would
need to supply a new valuation from a dealer and they (AMI)would up it...
