I gave up waving to MX5's with the top up a long time ago, as I never got a
response, obviously weren't enthusiasts. Now only wave to those with the top
down. Still not a lot of responses, but a much better hit rate than before.

Who said BMW drivers don't wave!!! What started this thread was my comment
that a young lady MX5 driver did not wave back at me, and I was in a BMW!
Mind you, in her defence, she is a very pleasant blonde young lady, in a
bright red sports car, whereas I am a balding, somewhat overweight, apparently
disreputable, 57 year old, in a "mutton dressed as lamb" motorcar, in fact,
the very kind of bloke her mother should have warned her about!
Appearances are, of course, deceptive, but in my case only because I can no
longer work up the energy!
If she noticed me, she would probably have doubted the integrity of my
intentions. Visions of Madeira glasses and "etchings" would have come to mind!
However, enough of this banality. You might be interested in the origin of the
idea of waving to members of your club.
It actually goes back to England and the early days of that august body, The
Royal Automobile Club.
In the early days of motoring, members of the British Constabulary were
equally sneaky, when it came to catching speeders, as our Police are now. But
they had to time vehicles over a measured distance with stop-watches. They
would indulge in all sorts of shady practices, hiding up trees and behind
bill-boards etc, to the general advantage of Her Majesty's Exchequer.
In those days, with vehicles much less reliable than they are now, the RAC had
numerous mechanic/patrolmen riding on motorcycles and side cars, with a whole
host of tools and spare parts in the side box, to help out stranded RAC
members they met on their travels, and indeed the AA started in more or less
the same way, but in opposition to the RAC. Both clubs originally formed in
the 1900s to combat the "Red Flag Act" a law which prescribed that vehicles
could not travel at more than 4 MPH and had to be preceeded by a man carrying
a red flag, (no, seriously, I am not joking).
In my young days, nearly 50 years ago, England was studded with small versions
of the "Tardis" which were RAC and AA call boxes from which a patrol man could
be called. Your membership of the various clubs was proudly proclaimed by an
enamel badge fitted in the radiator grill, or on a "badge bar" above the front
bumper. Class was a Jaguar XK120, with an RAC badge and that of "The British
Racing Drivers Club" across the grille. (My Grandfather had a similar
combination on a Bond Minicar, it really didn't work).
These RAC and AA patrolmen were very smartly turned out, in military style
uniforms, with jodhpurs and highly polished riding boots "Sam Brown" belts
and leather gauntlets. Upon spotting a member, by his badge, they would rip
off a very smart right handed salute.
Unless of course, there was a Police Speed Trap just a bit further up the
road, in which case they would still salute, but with the left hand.
But, they would only salute members of their own club, if you happened to be a
member of the other club, (and particularly the AA, which was very definitely
a slightly "lower class" organisation in the eyes of the Royal Automobile
Club), you were on your own.
So, in fact, the whole thing was a version of the "flashing headlights" of
today, but sanctioned by the very bodies who today seem to collude with the
Police in the "speed kills" myth.
The Motorcycle Patrolmen finally disappeared from British roads in the 1960s,
but we owe it to their memory to wave, it's a fine old British tradition!

Eric

Its funny, having read all these messages this morning about waving I decided
I would make a point today of giving everyone a second chance.
I waved at three MX5's. Two with the top up and one with theirs down. I had
mine down.
How many waved back?
Guesses please...
A big fat none! Bring back the motorcycle patrolmen. That's what I say!
(I'm in the RAC. You are right - far more classy!)

Alfa owners are also wavers, well those that own the older models, but many
with the flash new Alfas don't bother.
I have to be careful when I'm in the MX5 that I don't try waving to an Alfa
having driven Alfas and waved at them for years, its hard to break the
habit when I see one even if I'm in the Jappa!

well it's important for an Alfa owner to wave and be friendly as he knows
his Alfa is likely to crap out at anytime and he's going to need a tow form
someone...
Mind you one of my best car experiences/memories was from my late teen years
doing the ton in a friends Alfa along the roads of The National park going
skiing early in the morning, the fog had just lifted about 20 feet off the
ground listening to a loud acoustic guitar version of "Oh Lord please don't
let me be misunderstood"... totally f***ing magical. Not that anyone cares.
And by the way, this was of course back in the day when it was completely
safe to speed !-)

I have been reading the comments about waving on the website and as a very new owner of an MX5 living in a small town was most impressed when on a day trip to Dunedin last month that we were waved at by other MX5 drivers that we passed. My daughter who was with me at the time thought it was most friendly - I am sorry we did not wave back at any of those who waved - only because we didn't realise that this was what some of you do.

I am realy keen on some Work Emotion CR's and they can custom make you a set with your desired diameter, width and offset... cool. Ive lowered the car quite a bit on Ohlins, so ill probably have to flare the guards

Mine only rub on the front, the rears have more

My tyres rub only on the tabs that hold the plastic
guard liner in place, they only rub when going over
really big bumps at highway speed or if really braking
hard and turnig in while hitting a bump, if you roll
the guards then theyd be ok.
do a search on Miata net for wide wheels and see what
you come up with.
http://forum.miata.net/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=12
the concensus seems to be 15"x8" with a 225/45 and
35mm ofset.OR
16"x7.5"(35-40mm offset) with a 225/40 tyre is the max
you can go even then youll need some guard
rolling.Ride height is a big factor with ose sizes
though as you need to run pretty much stock height for
clearance.
16x7"with 35mm offset and 215/40's should be no
problem.
What wheels were you thinking of geting from
japan???

Bit off topic but re:ohlins - I have a set on my 94
and one started leaking... dont even look at the
cost of new ones - it will scare you to death. I got
all of them completely rebuilt by
Hawera Motorcycles. 5 - 7 Glover Rd. Ph:. 06-2784160.
They are the only company in NZ that can rebuild them
as far as I could find out
They also revalved them to be abit softer as they were
far too hard even on the softest settings - they are
now FANTASTIC - better than new, the ride and handling
is now transformed. I cant recommed the company enough
- the service and price was excellent!
Just thought I would throw that in incase anyone else
out there running ohlins ever has a problem (so they
dont plunge into the depths of dispair as I did when
it failed its wof...!)
As for wheels - dont mess about, get a set of Rays
Volk TE37 - made of forged unobtainium or some such
martian metal -my 15x6.5 come in at around 4kg each!
Will really make your ohlins show off their best
side...

the concensus seems to be 15"x8" with a 225/45 and
35mm ofset.OR
16"x7.5"(35-40mm offset) with a 225/40 tyre is the max
you can go even then youll need some guard
rolling.Ride height is a big factor with ose sizes
though as you need to run pretty much stock height for

Will really make your ohlins show off their best
side...
