Good 'ol Insurance again

Post by sfhardman » Fri Jul 29, 2005 4:04 pm

Did you tell the call centre or a branch office? With AMI the call centre pretty much have to say no, but the people in branch offices have more leeway...

National Auto Club will insure pretty much anything at a price.

Last time I dealt with AMI I was getting insurance on a prelude I'd bought as a project. The woman at the call centre asked if it was modified, I said no, but said I was thinking about it, intending to ask what mods they'd allow. Before I got a chance she said they wouldn't cover it, they don't cover modified cars. I said it's not modified. She said yes but you're going to modify it. I explained I was only wanting to ask what I could do, but she was insistent. I offered to hang up and call again and this time not say I was thinking about modifying it. She explained that the call would come back to her and she'd make a note on my file anyway. Things degenerated from there...

Sorry – I know that this has been covered before (I just cannot find it).

Doing the right thing by telling my insurers what I have done to the car
– and gee now they won’t cover me as the car is modified.

Can anyone please tell me a modified-car friendly insurer?

Not sure what mods you have done, but we have just had discussions with AMI
re putting in a roll bar. I have had a note attached to our policy saying
when the roll bar is installed & once AMI have seen the paper work it will
be approved with no change to our policy. When talking to the manager she
indicated any declared mods (as long as they weren't speed enhancing ones)
should be OK. But I think getting the note prior to installation covers your
butt!
Interestingly enough Graham first spoke to the call centre dudes where he
was told any car once taken on to the track was not covered at all. Even a
bog standard daily driver just tracked at a car club day! However the local
branch said this was incorrect--- phew!!!
