Timing Belt

Post by Robyn and Rich » Thu Jul 07, 2005 12:30 pm

HI TH ERE FOLKS... QUESTION TIME... WE BOUGHT OUR LOVELY LITTLE 89
ALL ORIGINAL 5 A MONTH OR SO AGO. WE LOVE IT... BUT,,,, IS THERE A
WAY OF TELLING IF THE TIMING BELT HAS BEEN DONE OR NOT. SOME VEHICLES HAVE
AN INSPECTION PLATE THAT LETS YOU SEE,,,, SO DOES ANYONE KNOW DOES THE MX5
HAVE ONE?? OR IS THERE A DUMMMIES WAY OF TELLING.
I PRESUME IT HAS BEEN DONE ONCE, BUT WONT BE THAT LONG BEFORE IT NEEDS IT
AGAIN,, SO THOUGHT WE MITE DO IT IF IT WAS LOOKING LIKE IT NEEDED IT.
ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Timing Belt

Woah settle down no need to yell !

Check your service book, most owners make sure it gets stamped
especially with something as expensive as a timing belt change.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Timing Belt

Hi Robyn & Rich. No there is not an inspection cover as such. You need to take the rocker cover off to have a look at the belt. Milage travelled is only one aspect to the timing belt needing to be changed. As it is a rubber compound it will deteriorate with age etc anyway. Also the tension pulleys may need to be replaced depending on the condition of them. It is a job you can do yourself if you have a reasonable mechanical knowledge.
If you are in Auckland, there is a technical day end of this month that would be worth attending to find out all about these sort of questions.

Timing Belt

Hi

If you remove the cam cover you will be able to inspect the timing belt.
I'm not sure if that will be very helpful as they look OK up until about
50km from breaking. My advice is to replace if you are worried as the
inconvenience of it breaking will be a hassle. The standard engine will not
do itself harm as the valves do not open far enough to interfere with the
pistons.

Cheers

Don
