I have just replaced the original Bose system in my 1998 NB with a JVC
G-805 unit. Thanks to the list I found out about
www.parrellimported.co.nz and saved $220.00 on the best price I could
find here in Blenheim! I replaced the speakers with 6.5" ones I had. I
would like to fit 8" ones (the original size) but can't find any.
8" component sets (especially sets with a driver that is not too deep)
are difficult to find. You might have to buy a woofer and tweeter
seperate (they are seperate in the NBs to begin with yes?) and make a
custom crossover. Jaycar might be good to find all the bits.

As for head units - don't know about quality, performance etc, but I
rate Dick Smiths stuff these days. They are bringing in electronics,
branding it their own and giving good support and warrantys. How about
this:

DSE Car CD Player

MP3 & WMA playback from CD-R(W)
SD b MMC FLASH Memory Card slot supports WMA & MP3 file playback
4x 35W RMS
Card remote
Detachable Face

My car does have the separate tweeters mounted high in the door. Essential
with the Bose speakers as they have an extremely limited frequency response
at the mid and high end. There is quite a bit of depth in the doors so very
shallow speakers are not required.
The only problem I have found with some of the rebranded equipment from DSE
and cheaper units from Repco etc is that they seem to be unable to handle
the extra vibration (when playing CD's) that is inevitable in an MX5. The
JVC and Sony ones I have in various vehicles are much less likely to skip in
rough conditions. Of course the more recent offereings could be much better
than a couple of years ago.
Looks like a pair of good 6.5" speakers might be the way to go unless I can
make a pair of 6x9's fit.
Neither Jaycar or DSE have suitable 8" speakers listed on their web sites.

Grant.

an internal siren placed, say, roughly where a perpetrator's ears will
be works well too...

PS - anyone tried this? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/232777.stm
