Lost screws

Post by Graeme H » Tue Apr 05, 2005 2:52 pm

Hi all
I'm missing a couple of screws (ok, ok, enough of the sniggering from the back) on my hard top.
The chrome plated brackets that hold the back of the top in place, have a swivel top that rotates to allow adjustment of the clamps. This swivel top is held closed by a small screw. My top is missing both of these, and the swivel tops vibrate (very irritating noises).
Anyone have any idea where I can get replacements? I tried North harbour mazda, but didn't get much luck. Any body got a dead hard top or similar?

What exactly is wrong with green (brg) mx5s.??? There seems to be a
lot of opposition to them from some list members. Brg was my first choice
of colour when I was first looking at buying. Then darkblue (quite rare),
then silver and red was a distant last as there seemed to be a lot of
them about and with fading colour too. I ended up with a nice 'aztec
silver model which I am very happy with. Eventually like you Gazza, I
would like to get a Mk2 NB and I think my colour preference would be the
same. Doug

BRG is supposed to be an unlucky colour. I had thought this was due to one
of the famous racing drivers having a bad season, but a little research
shows it goes back beyond the days of motor racing. Certainly is popular in
UK, second largest contingent at the 2000 national was BRG, the first being
Red. Yellow (Californias) are also popular, but not so many made, so not so
numerically large contingent. I went for Silver... :-)

Inside every small problem is a large problem struggling to get out.

Graeme, I'm sure the'll be a standard & metric thread - I think they are
countersunk through from memory? You can take one off my hardtop to
check if you like & go down to Bunnings/mitre 10 or a more screwy place cheers

Lost screws

All jokes about memory put aside, how on earth can you lose screws or bolts?
It's against all laws of the earth that we hold sacred (and what about Mr
Murphy who wrote them).

Excluding the law of "that little spring I didn't know was inside..." In
practice by natural laws the only time you can (and will) lose a screw is when
your almost finished whatever you're doing. Then as you are doing up the last
screw it's highly probable you will lose it down the back, although
technically it's not lost. It's merely fallen into some dark crevice
inaccessible by all of mankind, or into the depths of the parts you have just
replaced, thus requiring more work to recover said bolt than the original job
itself.

Once this is done and said bolt found or given up on. The cleanup will take
place. This is where the EXTRA bolt/s are found... and they even look dirty as
if they were doing something important. I now have a collection of many of
these 'special important bolts'. In fact after I did my radiator hoses, I put
the splash guard back on the underside of the car and I have four of these
"special looking, dirty bolts" left over... There were only about 10 bolts on
the whole job... and I have 40% of them left over. Trust me I have looked and
looked, I have no idea where they are from... But this is all part of the
natural law that we live by... we just have to accept it.

There is nothing wrong with green mx5s as long as you dont own one!!!
Wash the bloody things and get the mold off !!!
Seriously just enjoy a great car no matter what colour, and if you own a non
green mx5 you can always throw al ittle fun at green ones.

The screws were lost by the original owner, although why you'd want to loosen these particular screws is beyond me.
I did consider contacting japan to see if I could contact the PO and ask him to check in his box of 'dirty bolts' :0D

Some people love their MX5 standard, some like to add some bells and
whistles to make it look nicer, some add a huge spoiler and sound system
to make them look 18 again. Some of us simply love the balance and
handling and want to add some power to make the most of it.

So here is a game. The best reply gets to convince their wife (or
husband) that this is a good use of money instead of that family holiday
they wanted ...

To get power, retain the balance and handling (thus eliminating huge
V8's being thrown in) what would you do to your MX5?

Oh .. and the mods must be fairly easy to do - thus counting out 13b
rotaries being installed.

Here is a starter:

New performance shocks and springs
Sub frame bracing front, rear and a parcel shelf brace
Proper roll bar
Sway bars
New bigger brakes (being able to stop is goooood)
Turbo
Intercooler
Fuel pump
Fuel injectors
Air intake (with heat shield - or cowl intake)
Exhaust
New performances sparks and leads
Programmable ECU
BOV (a quite one)
Probably a new clutch
Paint it silver
