I used to do insurance underwriting for SIMU (now AMI). Basically, you can
see the wide variation of prices that have been quoted by various MX5
owners, this will be because of the following factors. 1) Age 2) no claims
discount history 3) previous driving records 4) Where in NZ the car is
insured (extra costs for some locations - eg...south island cos of ice/snow
etc - Auckland cos of the ---- drivers! 5) The particular policies of the
company providing the quote. Even the same company can have different policy
requirements - to quote AMI for example, when I first got a quote for them
for my MX5 they asked penetrating questions about alarm and (de)mobilizers
etc..saying they were required for this car etc...but when I came to insure
it actually, the guy said it was not required and although there is an
increased excess for the soft top (for malicious damage and theft) basically
I got the same cover at the same price of my previous vehicle (with no
apparent discrimination for it being an MX5). I guess what Im saying is
this: it pays to shop around and also when comparing insurance you need to
compare apples with apples (not the car but the insured 'person') Hope this
helps and does not confuse.
