M2 Facelift driving impressions

Post by Sam Parker » Tue Nov 28, 2000 9:06 pm

I have just returned the latest Black MX5 to Mazda (as displayed at Big Boys
Toys) after a five day test. (Tough work but someone has to do it). Although
there have been some comments on the list re power it definitely feels a lot
stronger in the real world, top end is not much different but the mid range
preformance is real good. I took it around some winding roads I use for car
testing and it is the most fun I have had for ages and all within the speed
limit (well almost all) - given I did the same route in the new WRX Impreza a
few weeks back that is saying something (I am not saying the MX5 is quicker -
it ain't but the feeling of a small agile car and the involvement of having
the roof down takes some beating). The body is noticeably stiffer again (the
M2 is anyway a lot better than the M1) - just a shame about the extra 50 or so
kgs. However this does seem to help the turn in which is real nice and the
handling is excellent - like effortless 100kmh plus on 35kmh posted corners.
The tyres look like rubber bands compared to those on my 90 and this does make
the ride a bit firm on bumps. The other noticeable improvement over the first
of the M2's is the exhaust note, this is now decidedly sporty rather than
virtually unnoticeable - still not as nice as the original 1.6-litre cars but
then I am biased.
The thing I would like most from an M2 on my M1 is the hood - the heated glass
window is great but not having to unzip the rear window just saves so much
time and hassle.

Sounds great.

re the hood and unzipping the window on your Mk 1... I have a 94 model but use a
cloth covered cylinder (a bit longer than the width of the window and around 10
cm in diameter) that I made up to fit up against the outside of the rear window
as I fold it down without unzipping it.. (an idea from MiataNet)... the cylinder
is supposed to prevent the window from creasing ... well it does prevent
creasing across the middle .. but has created a very minor crease at the
top...but given that my rear window was in what I would describe as "good"
condition and not "excellent" ... I can live with the minor creasing.. but now
could not live without the use of the device.. hood goes up and down in seconds.
