luggage racks

Post by vanessa page » Thu Nov 23, 2000 11:59 am

hi people

i was wondering if anyone could help me??

i'm looking into getting a luggage rack thingy (don't know quite what
they're called - you know - the chrome racks that sit quite flat on the
boot) put onto the boot of my mx5. can anyone tell me where i might be able
to get one of these and how much i might expect to pay for it - including
installation (i assume it would be screwed into the boot or something??).

thanx

Mazda produce a boot rack .. it looks awful and here in Australia was priced at
around a whopping$600! I checked with Moss motors in UK who produce a rack
and... it looked better than the Mazda rack but again the the price staggered
me.

The MG F dealers have a really good looking rack that would (probably) fit the
MX5 .. the cost $900.

At that point I stopped looking.

Hi Vanessa

I know the racks you mean - we have one on our MX5 and they look great.
Strictly for looks though - they only officially hold about 25 pounds! They
are called "Pack Racks" (I think!).

I'm not sure where to get them in NZ, but I've seen them for sale in the US
in the Miata magazine. They have websites that you can order directly from.

Hope this helps!

note also that there are two types that exist - bolt to the boot type and
clip on type (removeable). Not sure where to get them though - Chic might
know and I think his is clip on. Chic?

Vanessa - I have been following the mail re luggage racks since my reply this
morning.
I think you are probably getting the same picture that I did ie that the damned
things are expensive.

As my 94 MX is our only car & space on extended trips is at a premium I have
been thinking about adopting a different approach by moving the spare wheel
under the chasis... there are a number of instructions re this procedure on the
MiataNet forums. It usually means realligning a section of the exhaust system
so I am I haven't acted on this approach yet.

You may wish to consider it (assuming you haven't got a second or third
generation car that already has the spare nicely located in a well in the boot).

Regarding luggage racks. One of the members of the Christchurch club, an ex
engineer produces these in heavy duty chrome and it requires no holes to be
drilled. The last cost I had was $410 plus delivery. John Williams is his
name and he can be contacted at ph/fax (03) 384 3821 (sorry no e-mail
address).
