89/90 problem

Post by Tony Wilson » Wed Nov 22, 2000 4:43 pm

A day or two ago in reply to another enquiry, mention was briefly made of a
problem with the crankshaft (?) of the 89 / 90 models at about the time the
cam belt is replaced.
As I have an 89 model showing 120,000km on the clock I would like to find
out a bit more.
In laymans terms please - what's the problem - what's the symptoms - what's
the cost to remedy?
Thanks
TONY

Tony,

Read the info at this link, it explains the problem in detail. Fletch might
add his personal experience to this.

Tony, there were a couple of links in the archives of this list. (crank
nose or similar subject)
I've got photos of the keyway from Fletchers old engine - will have to post
them sometime...

This test shown to me by Fletcher checks for excessive crank keyway damage
1. Remove spark plugs
2. put oil dipstick or stick down plug well onto piston
3. rotate crank by hand or with socket/spanner
4. check that when piston reaches highest point (movement is shown by
dipstick) the pully markings actually show T for Top dead centre. I think
tolerance for accepted movement is about 1 degree either side. Fletcher?

3. rotate crank by hand or with socket/spanner

Just a note here... the Miata.net article specifically warns against
rotating the weaker short nosed crank with a spanner or anything else
attached to the crank nose bolt.
