Shocks & Handling

Post by Gary Morrison » Thu Nov 16, 2000 10:28 am

As there has been a little discussion of shocks...

I have Tokiko Illuminas, and have had them in the car for about 4 years.
Originally I set them as seemed appropriate (3 in front 2 in rear) and left
them there. I wanted to stay away from the boy racer tendency to put in
adjustables and then set them all to full hard... I thought I could tell the
difference when changing the front vs rear... and as we know our car is very
responsive to changes in anything to do with suspension. More recently I'd
been wondering whether the extra expense of adjustables was justified.
Anyway, after Taupo I had become aware that maybe the back was a little
soft, so last week I pulled out the spare, and the panel on the left side of
the boot, and adjusted the rears 1 more click harder. Now front and rear
were set the same. I expected to find a harder ride. What I did find was
surprising. The car did ride a little firmer, but it also felt more solid
and as one. That was good, the surprise though was that the steering, which
is power assisted, firmed up noticeably. I'd always felt that the power
steer was over assisted, a little. And I liked Fletch's manual rack. Now
with this change there is a more meaty feel to the steering, and its great.
I've thought about why it should be so, and the only explanation I've come
up with is that as you turn away from straight ahead the weight transfer is
meeting more resistance in the rear now, and this provides the added "feel"
to the steering.

Anyone else like to venture an alternative explanation?

Gary
