Hot Rod

Post by VIKING RACING » Wed Nov 15, 2000 6:49 pm

Hi there
I wonder if someone could help me with this problem.
I have Koni Adj.shocks with the lowest setting, the front is perfect height,
but the back is around 30mm higher(measured from the floor to the top of wheel
arch) it looks like a Hot Rod leaning forward. So i wonder if someone else have
had this apperance.Should i change the springs in the back or is it some other
way to fix it?

Can you have the front set on the higher perch? I understand Konis have two
levels they can sit at.

There are 3 perch settings on Konis. Ways to fix height are
a) set the front higher by one or even two perches (will raise overall
stance obviously)
b) change the springs (all round - not just back)
c) get rear springs cut lower
c) do a combination.

Mine with Konis sits lower at the front also - It does balance out a bit
when I'm sitting in the car though (hey - no jokes!) I'm on middle perch &
uprated/lower springs. I do intend to go to highest perch at the front
sometime when I get around to it.

Some springs from US vendors may be more designed for Konis, however there
are a number of people in the US running Konis and Stock springs (some with
cut springs)

Many people will tell you not to cut springs - but IMO they are the people
with money to buy new ones. Granted - cutting springs won't give you the
precision of specially made coils, but there are a number of budget
enthusiasts in the US that cut a coil or so off with acceptable results.
You'll have to try & see though, as I would have no idea how much to have
cut to balance the height.

Is it possible that the springs could have been swapped front to rear? I
doubt it, but anyone know?

Springs are a lot less expensive than shocks... if you can afford the shocks
and want the lowered effect then a good set of springs is worth the
investment, and done at the same time there is no additional installation
cost. I've been told that the Racing Beat "Street" springs are a very good
match for the Konis, and they're listed at about US$35 per spring. Total of
US$140 for a set. At least here in Wellington, Mazda spares will import
Racing Beat and sell at close to the NZ$ equivalent of the US$ price
converted.

It wasn't mentioned in the original email, but john bought the car with the
shocks installed. I have no idea what his budget is. Of course - buying
springs is a better option if you have the money - but I still maintain
cutting the springs is a viable solution budgetwise. Just giving people
options.

YMMV, JMHO, TLA :)

Sorry guys, cutting springs is illegal. You will fail a WOF if caught. I
dont recommend it even though my car had cut springs for over three years
without being noticed. Cut springs also give a very harsh ride as you would
cut off the progressive part of the coil..
It is not possible to mix up front and rear springs as the difference in
length is very noticable.
King Springs are available from the agents

Andy who works in sales is an MX5 owner and club member. I believe they may
also import Konis, give him a ring.

I totally agree with Peter, cutting springs is a no, no anyway, and
only a fool would risk his life to do so, as an engineer i know you
would dramatically change the spring rate to an unknown factor,
further more you are cutting off the flat end of the spring coil,
they are the same top and bottom, therefore only half of one coil is
touching which ever way you mount it lending to the spring trying to
pop out as it tries to compress ( it will try to go bow shape ), i
know, seen it happen, also on the rebound it could also jump out
depending on how much is cut off, seen that also, when you jack the
car up and the suspension drops the spring becomes loose, as for the
comment about affordabilty if you cant do it correctly leave it
alone, your life is worth more than a few hundred dollars for the
correct springs.
You can actually get the front and rear springs reversed, saw an
import on a dealers front with them like it, i looked underneath to
check the colour code, and then informed the dealer, it really did
look like a dragster, for those that are interested, the colour code
is...front: red for manual, white for auto...rear: blue for
manual, orange for auto, for Japanese imports anyway.
