Good source of info for Racing an MX5 ?

Post by Rowan Hick » Tue Nov 27, 2001 4:30 pm

Hi Guys n Girls,

Introductions, just joined the list today. Infact just hatched a plan today to
get an MX5 and get on the racetrack..

I currently only a "slightly" tweaked 300ZX TwinTurbo Manual 2seater which is
proving not cheap to get onto the racetrack, been to puke twice already,
loadsa power but it all comes at a cost..Been doing the sums and it ain't
pretty.. I jumped on the mx5 club site and saw a review for the Toyo T1s's.. a
whole set $840, where one of my rear tyres, which are T1S's as well, costs me
$600+ at mates rates, not good when they don't last more than 15k. That pretty
much says it all.

So I'm going to get an MX-5. That decision was easy. Next step deciding what
to get, what to do to it etc... .

So my theory at this stage is to get a cheap one which is a bit rough round
the edges, and set it up for the track.

Q1) What to do to it to get it ready for the track ?
Q2) And what are the pitfalls in buying an MX5 ?.

One of my mates who now also owns a TTZ had a Rod Millen kitted MX5,
originally bought in ChCh and sold in Greenlane about 4 years ago. Absolutely
spectacular round the twisty bits so am aiming for that handling.

Q3) Wheres a good source of info for racing mx5's ?

Thanks in advance

Rowan Hick
PS: As an aside I'm wondering if my mates Millen MX5 ended up in the hands of
a club member ? Fairly distinctive car - I believe whoever originally bought
it went to town on it, had the full millen suspension & body kit on 17in (i
think) alloys, red, with a rather nice sound system, wood trim inside.

Hi Rowan,

Colin Partington who is a club member has been in the process of setting up a
1.8 litre MX-5 for club sprint meetings. I'm not sure how far he has got, but
if you're listening Colin maybe you can chip in...

As far as racing MX-5s goes I'm not sure where there is info, but if you want
to extract more performance you can look at...

Gary, Jeff, Thanks for the info, been trawling through websites this evening.
Everywhere I look they seem to talk about turbos..arrrhh.. already got two of
them don't need another! Still sounds appealing.. [mental note:
no...must..stop..thinking..horsepower..]

yes Colin please do chip in or email me your phone number or something. I'd be
interested to hear the things you don't find out on the american sites (ie...
do you need to baffle the sump, put a catch can in, what can you remove to
lighten the car etc)

for NA (normally aspirated) stuff, try solomiata.com
or searching for the user "nramsey" on miataforum.

no comments on this Fletch ??

for weight reduction, there's an archived thread on
miataforum titled "adding lightness"

PS - didn't someone advertise a rolling body mx5 on
the clubsite recently?

HTH,
