fuel filter

If someone was to get a very small amount of water in their fuel tank would the fuel filter prevent it getting to the engine or is it just there to catch small dirt particles.

Hi there

As far as I'm aware the water won't mix with the fuel. You draw fuel from
the bottom of the tank , the water should sit on the top of the fuel. The
filter wont take out the water though. I may be wrong but to
successfully get the water from the tank you may need to take it out ,
(the fuel tank) and drain it properly. .

By the way , how much water ? and how ?

cheers

I thought fuel was lighter than water, hence the water settles to the bottom
of the tank with the fuel sitting on top.
Have I got my relative densities wrong?

I have heard the Americans talking about a fuel additive they can buy
at local auto-parts stores called "gas drier" or something similar...
supposedly it breaks down the water or something so it just gets burnt
with the fuel... I've never specifically looked for a similar
product, but I dont ever recall seeing it at repco, or similar.

Many years ago, my father mentioned that if you have water in the fuel
tank, putting in some methylated spirits will do a similar job...
break down the water, or allow it to form small enough drops to get
through the fuel system and combusted in the engine...

This was a long time ago , and a rather hazy memory at best... see if
you can get confirmation from a mechanic, and a hint at how much you
need (a cupful? a litre?), before trying it...

Fletch.

Hi there
In the Old country(Sweden) you always have to add a additive that mix with
water in the winter to avoid ice blocking hoses and carb4s.(I didn't do it
until I got stuck in -29C in t-shirt and jeans, and I can tell you I was
fu!!! cold until I got rescued)
I have actually seen this product here in NZ at Kmart, cant recall the name
but go and have a look in the carsection.
