Soft top catches

Post by Nic Siggs » Tue Oct 09, 2001 9:55 pm

I have a 1998 mx5 imported from Japan that I purchased 3 months ago having
owned a 1990 model for the last 3 yrs
The problem is surcing parts for the hood catches ! It appears that you can
only buy the whole thing for around $350 nz !!! seems a lot when I only want
the plastic bush thingy that is screwed to the underside of the catch and
locates in the windscreen . Any ideas ?? thanks

What about trying Mazline Partsworld? They are in Christchurch but have second hand as well as new parts at reasonable prices. Phone 03-377-2201. They specialise in Mazda parts.

Hi nic

If it is just a bush any engineering machine shop should be able to make one
for you at a lot less than $350.

Hi I perhaps didn't explain this prob very well so I'll try again,
The plastic part in question is secured to the catch on the hood, if you take
off the catch and look on the underside it is screwed on their, as I haven't
actually bought a new car I can't say whether the part covers the lug that
locates in the windscreen or not but I have made that assumption (If any one
knows please tell me) The parts fiche is pathetic but it does show the part as
separate from the catch although not priced separately .
Strangely enough it seems that an owner in the UK has the same problem and was
asking about it in August on one of the UK mx5 sites that I came across (I
have emailed to find out what they did ) This may not be a problem for the
vast majority of cars here, I tend to think that the part probably wears out
or breaks off quit quickly and the catches are readjusted to suit . My car's
hood is usable but it is not as I would like it to be and indeed not as good
as the old car was, undoubtedly new catches would fix the problem but just
possibly 2 parts that could not possibly cost more than $5 and about 10
minutes of work would also fix it (why don't Mazda nz stock them ?? or Mazda
UK for that matter )

I know the piece you speak of. Black plastic the shape of the end of a finger
with a tab with a screw hole in it, right? Mine cracked on my first MX5 and I
glued it back together. You should be able to get one from a dismantler. I
wouln,t try securing your top with out it as your top may leak. You may be
able to improvise somehow.
