How did you first notice it had died? was it just a high reading on the temperature gauge or was there some other sign

No .. my wife (on returning to the local car park) rang me at work and said what
the funny green stuff that was under the car might be! With some help from the
Royal Auto Club roadside mechanic he ascertained that the water pump was the
problem.
As I indicated ... no warning and I have my car serviced regularly by the gun
MX5 folk here in Melbourne and they had not picked up any warning either... on
the other hand I have seen nothing written about the life span of a water
pump... others in the Vctoria club have had no problesm and have 200,000K on
the clock.
