Waterpump

As a rule of thumb, when should a waterpump be replaced? My car has done
120k and when I had the timing belt done at 100k my mechanic had said that
my waterpump would need replacement in the near future as it was "tight"
and not turning freely. Due to $ constraints I couldn't do both jobs (
waterpump and cambelt.) at the same time. There is a squeak coming from
under the bonnett but after applying some drylube to the alternator belt
the squeak reduced ( it was still there, but reduced ).

I had been told by another mechanic that its not necessary to change the
pump unless you are losing water, which I'm not. Temperature wise no
problems either - all appears normal. Am I best to change the waterpump, or
will it keep going? Are there any other signs that my waterpump is about to
expire? What would happen if I didn't change it?

Anyway, the waterpump has come back to the top of my MX5 "to do list" but I
just wanted to check out the advice that I had been given before I spent
the $$.

Mine died at 120,000 Km without any warning... luckily was able to get it
home.. from there on a truck to my mechanic... like the timing belt it's not one
of those things you want to die on you too far from a good mechanic.

Ditto,
Mine died at ~130,000 km, noticed high temp on guage 5 mins from home.
Had cam belt replaced at same time.

As a rule, failing pumps manifest themselves by leaking from the seal or
noise from the bearings.
If yours is doing neither don't worry. Make sure that you are using
anti-freeze/inhibitor in the cooling system.
