Has anyone else had problems with a stiff gear change between 1st and 2nd.
It is worse when the engine is cold.

I have had the same problem in a couple of my cars. Don at Aotoway.services@xtra.co.nz
changed the oil in the gearbox to a special 5 speed oil and all problems disappear
after a few Km running. The last car we did it to had 104k on the clock and it was
like treakle that came out. Contact Don and he will tell you what the oil was. Would
recommend doing it.

You can buy enough Redline MTL for about $30. Have the gearbox refilled, and
also do the shift turret - you need to suck out the gunky oil that will be
left in there. It should shift as smooth as butter. Bear in mind though that
early cars are known for having a slightly notchy shift between 1st and 2nd.

I have found the same - and frankly for a modern car the gearchanges can't be
rushed or she graunches - particularly 1st to 2nd. Changing down from 5th to
pass is slow too. I put Slick 50 in the box but no real improvement.

See my previous post... the gearshift in the MX-5 is very highly rated... its
should not be as you describe... have you looked to see if the oil in the
shift turret is still OK? In older cars it will be very gunky and in some
cases has been reported to have dried out completely. I think it takes about
100ml in there, but remove any old stuff first. You need to remove the plastic
hardware from the centre storage compartment forward to get at it, and you may
find that you need to replace the rubber shift boot(s) while in there, mine
had perished. Its an easy half hour job. Using the right oil seems to make a
difference too, I used Redline MTL in both the gearbox and turret and it
shifts as smooth as...

Kendall Racing Supplies on Sunnybrae Rd has it -
you'll need a quart of the GL-5 (not GL-4) spec fluid,
which is $25.

It's on the north shore though, not South Auckland.

Hope that helps,
Jeff

For the gearbox the fluid is specifically labelled MTL (Manual Transmission
Lube)

oops, right you are... it's the diff that needs gl-5
oil. MTL is gl-4 which is the right stuff for the
gearbox.
