RE KONI DETAILS

Post by Mathew » Mon Aug 27, 2001 1:03 pm

I have just been pricing up adjustable Konis and new springs and every shop I've spoken to has asked me if I plan to go racing, because if I'm not they say I'm wasting my money on adjustable height shocks. They all reckon the lower spec Koni's with adjustable firmness is more than enough. So at this stage it looks like I'll go with the lower spec Koni's and some lowered springs which will damage my wallet to the tune of $1500 fitted and aligned (as opposed to just under $2000 with the up-spec Koni's).I don't take my car out on the track very often, but I do drive it quite hard on lovely winding roads. Am I doing the right thing?
Also, has anyone had any experience with EBC GREEN brake pads? They're supposed to pretty shit hot, and supposedly don't cover your rims in brake dust.

Hi Matthew

I fitted Konis with adjustment for firmness along with King springs to my '92 in Sydney. Fantastic.
I also fitted stiffer sway bars. Performance on the road and at the track is wonderful.

I am less than happy with the Pedders solution I fitted to my '92 in Auckland. Lowered the car just right, but shocks are much too soft, too much rebound and built for mainly for comfort in my view.

I am considering replacing the shocks for the firmness adjustable Konis even though the Pedders only have 7,000kms use.

My view is save some money, and go for the Koni's and lowered springs.

Stocks give us an excellent deal already (umm... and Andy is in the club!)

You may be able to get cheaper from the US, but freight is a killer and
warranty may be difficult etc etc

As an alternative to Koni there is the KYB AGX adjustable. I have just
fitted these to my car, no experience with thm yet so I can't comment. I
bought them because they are the hot favourite amongst the US Miata Club
crowd at the moment. One nice thing - they are made exactly to fit the MX-5,
no need to drill out the bumpstop and shock mount as with the Konis. They
also have an 8 way adjustment that is in the wheel well, so you can make
changes without having to remove stuff in the boot as with other brands.
