Fitting a Nokia car kit

Post by Mike Pearson - WYSIWYG... » Sun Dec 22, 2002 9:41 am

Hi, has anyone got observations about the best place to
fit the various components (speaker, mic, cradle) of a
Nokia car kit and why?

Regards

I did this a few years ago and assume you have a similar kit. It took me
hours to install!

Thread the mic wire under the dash and past the driver's door hinge up the
side of the windscreen and attach it at the top of the windscreen pillar. It
works well there.

Don't attach the aerial to the windscreen glass at top left as I did. It worked
fine but made a godawful screaming noise which was offensive with the top
down. It was a great relief when I got rid of mine. I can't say where you
should attach it! Maybe lower down the windscreen? That would of course
reduce its effectiveness.

I put the cradle with inbuilt speaker on the left side of the radio, bolted onto
vertical surface of the black plastic surround. There wasn't enough space
next to my left knee and it was fine over there. Be sure to put some ally
behind so you are bolting to the ally not the plastic which is not strong
enough especially if the passenger nudges the cradle with his/her right knee.
It has quite a lot of leverage and will easily snap the plastic.

If you have one like mine, you will find the dangling wires are a nuisance. I
couldn't just dock the phone into it; I had to attach the wires too. My new
phone won't do that either (argh). It's worthwhile to attach them somehow
(cable ties?) to the cradle so that they are conveniently to hand when you are
installing the phone.

I put the bonus telephone handset next to my left knee - plenty of space, it's
quite slim - and very valuable when topdown, I used it often.

I'll be interested in any responses you get. Only got as far as the aerial
on mine so far (the 2nd hand kit I got didn't work). The electrician put the
aerial in the top centre of the screen, and it was only when it started
raining I discovered that if you put it there then the wipers keep hitting
it. He said he'd fitted heaps of aerial to MX5's in that position before,
but all I can say is there must be some very surprised owners out there!

I put the aerial for my ham radio on the rear by the fuel flap. A good cell
phone aerial could be fitted there. Better performance would be possible
compared to an on glass type, if you choose a high gain type. The height
compared to the top of the windscreen shouldn't make too much diference as
there is no body metal to screen the radiation from the aerial as there is
on a tin top.
The bracket for mine is as clos as possible to the rear of the fuel flap.
Two bolts are used to hold the bracket to the car and the coax cable is run
down the rain channel, behind the rear number plate and up through an
existing hole in to the boot.
I originally mounted the speaker on the vertical front of the rear deck just
above the lock for the arm rest storage lid. Worked ok there. I now have the
speaker in the ash tray behind my home made analogue clock.
Some photos are at this site:

If you want I could photograph the bracket for you.
Hope this helps a bit.
After 35 years fitting r/t's and now cell phones as well in vehicles, it
seems to be getting more difficult to find a suitable mounting place!
Bit surprised at anybody fitting aerials on a windscreen and fouling the
wipers. Even here in Marlborough where it doesn't rain that often we know to
check for that!!
