More Power.

Post by Peter Cronwright » Mon Dec 02, 2002 5:57 pm

Dear MX5 Guru's,

I'm wanting to get more power out of my stock (except for pod filter and
advanced timing) 1600cc 1990 MX5, I don't want to spend more than $2000.
What suggestions do you have, to get the most bang for buck?

Hehe, do what I fancy, Nitrous Oxide. Oh then buy a new clutch..

the 'enlightened' path:
- MiataLink ECU (~$1600) + used headers (~$200) +
exhaust (~$300)

the dark side:
- sell it and buy one of those turbo MX5s that keep
popping up in the Trade&Exchange :D

mwahahahaha...

where can you get used headers for $200

Headers, muffler, cold air intake. I got my 1.6 up to 100 - 105 kw at the
crank. Fabricated the cold air system myself though, not difficult.

Any pictures of your cold air intake available, Lou? Did it make any
noticeable difference? My MX5 already has a Genie header fitted, no catalytic
converter and the rear muffler is as fitted to an early model Honda. Somewhat
smaller than the factory unit I gather, but allowed the spare to be mounted
under the floor as well. I don't think the ignition timing has been changed
either. Need to check that. Is the timing change a worthwhile mod as well? Any
beforre and after figures would be interesting, especially the effect on
torque at lower speeds is of interest to me (would suit my auto better). The
car seems to have plenty of power in the windy bits as long as you hold it in
2nd and keep the revs up as you would expect, but a bit more torque lower down
would be nice.

Initially, I ducted air from the area between the rad and under tray up to the
stock air box. I added another intake tube opposite the original in the
airbox. This would be far harder to do with air and p/steer. With the JRSC
filter, I'm using these ducts plus one from the bulkhead where the washer
bottle used to be. Another method is to duct air from the inner guard. taking
cold air from anywhere is good as long as it's not a low pressure area and the
cleaner the air the better.
With this set up my 80 -110km/h time went from 12.5 to 10 secs. So there was a
reasonable boost to low rpm torque too.
The timing bump is worth doing, it gives small gains, mostly in 'feel'. But
it's free. On the dyno, difference between 14* and 18* was a negligible at
6000 rpm but showed a small gain at 2000.

Cory -
stake out the club-forsale section, and try the Ross Campbell/Harvey twins - mx5mart and piecesof5 (what's happening there anyway?)

The pod-filter+headers+exhaust+timing bump combo was roadster-bliss, and I did the whole thing for ~$600. Schweet !

Jeff
I picked up a Link ecu from a friend for $400 and I am looking at the
supercharger options at the moment and maybe some kelford cams. I am
considering the pros and cons of retrofitting a mr2 supercharger.

Sounds good, any idea how much power increase this gave you?

Peter -
I rambled on about it some months back:
http://www.mx5club.org.nz/emaillists/nz ... g02462.sht

the "butt-dyno" says there was a lot more than when I
first bought it... FWIW with mods it was no problem
maintaining a 100km/h cruise over the bridge, stock -
it was anaemic!

Best part was the induction+exhaust noise was
f-a-b-u-l-o-u-s ... I shoulda recorded it :D

Jeff

PS - anyone care to make an offer on said Mazdaspeed
exhaust? I'll be changing it soon !

That suggests to me it had something wrong before so in fact it was
sub stock.
