Fun things to do with electric windows (was Re: Electric win

OR cut the wire going to the windows and extend it with some decent power
cable or similar to a permanent connection in the the engine bay (there are
a couple of decent cables you can junction around the fuse box - but put a
30A inline fuse in. The Haynes manual has good wiring diagrams.

BUT - these aren't connected to IGN for a reason. You play with your
windows a few times with the ignition off, and you may not start the car
again. They draw a great deal - especially older ones with worn out motors
and misaligned tracks.

Also, if you reqire them, use BIG cable. Big cables mean less volt drop as
well as current handling capability. You only have 12V to wind the windows
(with the engine off) so the higher the voltage at the window, the faster
they'll wind. Finally - Big cables should only be joined by soldering, or
possibly professional crimp connectors & proper crimp tool.

SO - some cool things you with your motors...

1. Connect them via a 30A relay to permanent 12 Volts as well as the IGN
(with another fuse also of course). Use a simple timer (go to Jaycar/DSE or
a security wholesaler) to time the relay to be only on for 30 seconds. That
way you can turn off your ignition and still play with the windows for a
while without risk of battery fade.

2. Do the same as above for 30 minutes, but add your entire ACC on another
relay, and only if you push a hidden button. That way, you can park on the
beach, play with your windows and have your stereo run for a while. I did
this with my last car (it had 4 batteries in it which helped)

3. Buy an electronic window winder module from a car alarm supplier. You
can control your windows from a keyring remote and also have them wind up
automatically then the alarm is set. I did this, and at the same time
rewired them completely with new 8 guage power cable for faster winding
speed. (both windows now have one touch up/down control also)
