What turbo?
If I put a turbo on my car, which one to choose? There seems to be so many
of them. I need (sic) about 240 RWHP. Will be replacing the ECU. I really
don't know a lot about turbos. Any suggestions?

heh, i was just reading yr post on miataforum Clive...
my dream setup would be a equal-length, tubular
manifold, leading to a Garrett GT25 ball-bearing
turbo, and a 3" downpipe. Good spoolup response and
good power (<320 hp) too.
the GT25 is an up-to-date design offering lightweight
materials and modern, efficient turbine design. It
comes with the AVO kit (?) but can be bought on it's
own for ~$2500, maybe less if you check the
Skyline/NZPC forums.
a t3/t4 could be nice too, real big power potential,
but doesn't suit my style.
here's some links, if you haven't seen 'em already...
www.racingmazda.com (t3/t4 kit)
www.turbofast.com.au (compressor maps)
www.flyinmiata.com (toys galore)
www.todaracing.com/Miata.html (engine buildup)
www.avweb.com/articles/pelperch/pelp0018.html (EGT,
AFR, power relationships. Heavy stuff)
I also find miataforum.com great for searching+finding
answers to technical questions. Google.com is good for
finding non-mx5 techie stuff too.
Sometimes I think a sportsbike would be easier! Yamaha
R1 anyone?
cheers,
Jeff

oh - and on a more helpful note... I believe a number of people look at
Flyinmiata's lineup and either just buy one of their kits, or build
something similar. They've done it all before many times (so probably get
it right) and all their kits give you and indication of what HP they give
and what upgrade items they come with. They also tell you what other
upgrades you will need for each (like clutch etc)

Hi Clive,
It seems to come down to an FM2 kit or AVO. Avo is closest - Aust. Lots of
info on miata.net forum.
You'll probably need 15 psi to achieve 240. I don't know about those power
levels on our crowded, wet, twisty roads though. You should get zero to no
licence in about 11 secs.

Yes well, maybe a slight exaggeration for effect. Nevertheless 200hp (150KW)
would be quite exciting...
There may be an M45 coming up for sale soon...

BR Performance can get close to 200whp with their M45 kits. The cold side kit
sounds brilliant, don't know if it suits RH drive though. Even a FM4.2 seems a
good upgradable unit.

Why do you say the cold side install may not suit a RH drive car Lou? The
weight is not that much. I'm sure there are MX-5 drivers around that weigh
more than me AND the SC combined. I'm still not totally sold on the Turbo
over the SC. If I could make 180rwhp (134rwKw) I think I would be
happy...at least for a while. Brant at BRP (
http://BRPerformance.net/cgi-bin/merchant2/merchant.mv? ) is making around
these figures with just the JR Boost Timing box. I'm sure you could get
more controlling it with a Link or Haltech E6K.
That way I could run another set of injectors.

The only thing that could get in the way is the steering column. I thought
that would be way out of the way; but I don't have my 5 to check.

Weight's not the prob, space might be. There is 2 m/cyls where the SC wil go.

I missed the last bit. A single set of 440cc injectors are all you'll need.
