Needing a new ECU is a fairly rare event, but deciding if the diagnosis is
correct is very simple.

Does the car now behave properly with the new ECU?

Plug the old one back in and see if the fault returns.

If the fault returns, then re-fit the good one and pay up your money. If it
doesnt, hand them back the ECU you dont need.

In a 1.6, the ECU is bolted under a plate in the passenger foot-well, under
the carpet. In the 1.8, I believe its under the carpet behind one of the
seats?

Think only some of the later models has them behind seats - poss 96-97?
Then also might have only been left hand drives & not Eunoses/MX5s. My 94's
ecu is definately under frot passenger footwell...
