I wouldn't bother with a computer in the car for MP3s - Creative Audio's
Nomad MP3 probably works out cheaper and is the size of a CD walkman. I have
a 6GB one in my car about a thousand hours of music and it fits in the glove
box :-) It's very shock proof - I did lots of twisty loose metal at the
weekend and no problems at all.

Creative Audio now do a 20 GB version.

PS anyone know of a good product for removing tar seal spots from the
paintwork - must have driven through some road works :-(

I don't think I would have bothered but I got the laptop for $100 with a
broken screen, so its worked out pretty cheap. The only other cost was
about $35 for components for the DC/DC PSU. Just need to fit the blooming
thing now. Theres always the option to fit a screen somewhere (where???)
for GPS...

We used to use butter when I was supervising road sealing.

I like to listen to CD's in the car, unless you've got rather large MP3's
the degredation in the audio is rather noticable, expecially with the
speakers so close

yeah I don't notice any quality degradation on MP3s at 160kbp, which is the
normal encoder setting I use - even when burned back to CD and played on
expensive Hi-Fi's (denon, nad, quad, etc...) people don't notice the
difference.

Re: your question on tar spots - try WD40. Failing that try a car paint shop
or somewhere like LJ Smits (East Tamaki and Wairau) - you should be able to
pick up a can of wax/grease remover for $10 to $15 (which if you have a
white car like mine, is a good option for getting the tar stain off the
paint before polishing).

I personally don't mind large files, and I don't notice any degradation. I
only use the headrest speakers at very low volumes, just for a little
backfill. I still like the idea of having lots of music at my disposal, and
if I get bored I can switch back to the cd player or radio.
